I have an opportunity to trade for a 74 SF Super Reverb, it's in great shape, totally stock, with the original owners manual and schematics etc. What I'd be trading is a mint (and I do mean mint) 74 Bandmaster Reverb and a 96 Epiphone Les Paul Standard straight across. Is this a good deal, you guys think?

The proposed swap seems to be weighted to your trading partner's favor......

I agree with Arjay. If you know how to read schematics, look up your BMR and the super reverb and compare them. Then you'll get the picture.

Yeah, a 40+-year-old amp that is "totally stock" just might need some maintenance, caps at least, maybe tubes and possibly more.

Well I am aware that they're similar amps, circuit-wise, actually very close to the same and easily modifiable to become the other, but I've been specifically after a Super for awhile and this one's as clean as they come, it's got the offset speakers. And I already figured in maintenance on the Super, my amp guy is Uncle Spot out in Lodi, great guy. I'm a big X fan, so a Super Reverb to me is like having a Super Lead to a Ramones fan, if that makes sense. It's a non master Super, which is great. I sort of figured he might be getting the better end, how much better of a trade do you think he's getting? Is he coming out a little ahead or laughing to the bank (for lack of better terms)

I've had both a SF BMR head (TFL-5005D) and a drip edge SR. The SR has a much different tone than the BMR. My guess is the output tranny of the SR and the four 10-inch speakers. Really dunno. I sold the BMR. But, from what I can remember, it had a cleaner tone --- to loud, than the SR. But, the SR has better harmonics. Warmer tone.

You have photos of the SR, you wish to buy?

I do have pictures, I can see that the Super is very very very clean, conditionally. From what I find, Bandmaster Reverbs sell for 6-700 usually, whereas Super Reverbs sell for 850-1,200 depending on condition etc. I think it's not too uneven value wise. If you guys could lend a little more advice I'd have my mind made

My intent was to prevent you from *pissing away* a pretty nice guitar whilst pursuing a trade of dubious merit.

But it you're hell-bent to do otherwise then be my guest.

And when you return here to snivel and whine about the folly of your decision, you'll find me just as sympathetic.

A 1996 Epiphone Les Paul Standard is a nice guitar? It's my least valuable guitar. I'll be playing a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Standard or a Hallmark II through the Super Reverb. The guitar is worth 350 max. Is the Super Reverb frowned upon in these parts?

No. The SR is considered one of Fender's better amps.

That was my perception as well. My initial view of this deal was that I'm trading a run of the mill Epiphone and a somewhat ignored SF era amp for a somewhat acclaimed model, I always viewed the Super as being in a higher echelon than the less valuable Bandmaster Reverb. My dream amp is a Quad Reverb, but those are fairly rare. Later on down the road it'll be much easier to trade straight across for a Twin Reverb with the Super than the Bandmaster, but I doubt that happening. 4x10 is my favorite speaker combination, the Super is easier to distort than a Twin by far and have a more complicated sound to my ears. Arjay... how much do YOU think I'm falling short in this deal?

I was thinking something on the order of two hundred bucks, based on my perceived value of your Epiclone LP at circa $500. But if it's in fact a lesser-value bread and butter model then perhaps the proposed deal is closer to parity. Your call, of course.
