I just got this amp. I don't have much experience with tube amps. just saying.

This is a two channel amp and I find that the lead or drive channel sounds fuzzy right off the get go. I am not finding that I can turn the amp up to a decent level and get the two channels more-or-less matching.

In case that isn't clear - I would like to be able to turn the amp up to gig levels and switch channels but not have a drastic change in sound. I bit more volume and a bit of crunch but what I am getting is Fuzz.

What steps should I follow to problem solve. i confess I haven't even looked at the tubes to see how they glow.

And maybe this amp is designed this way. I know it isn't a popular amp. Maybe there are mods that guys get done to it?

Thanks in advance. I'm in toronto

Welcome to the Forum!

Do you have a speaker cab that you can hook to the amp? To rule-out onboard speaker issues. Need to check the idle bias on the 6L6GCs. Was the amp serviced? Original filter caps inspected and changed, If necessary?

How old are the tubes? Do you have some known good 12AX7 and 12AT7 tubes lying around that you can sub into the sockets? Do this one-by-one, to find any bad tubes.

Do the same with some known good 6L6GCs, too.

Good luck! :D

Tube glow do not mean tube are good or bad , it is not a bulb lamp .
A good tune -up as BMW2002Ti suggest .
With new tubes ?

Toronto , there few good vintage amp storesvthere , any good tech ?

Oh thanks - I didn't see these replies right away. Right now I have a reissue blues deluxe at home and I am finding the sound - different than the BDRI but not sooo bad as I was expecting. The drive is better except it is too fuzzy too soon. Like I can only use the drive on maximum 2 - because it is too distorted.

What mod would I need to keep the signal in the drive channel cleaner for longer?

Thanks

Have you checked the bias of the output tubes?

Is the "Boost" function on (pull the mid pot)?

Have you tried turning down the "Lead" pot?

Are you sure that there is a 12AT7 in the PI position (V5)?

Have you tried using input 2?

The "Lead" channel isn't really for clean anyway.

It's unlikely that you will be able to get both channels to gig level and still balance them.
The clean channel is low gain like a BF Bassman and the drive channel is very high gain, like a Marshall.
The low power switch may help.
The fizz may be helped with low noise preamp tubes such as a JJ gold pin

Thanks everyone - I guess the amp is too loud for my only guitar amp (me being a bass player - this is for me) and the learning curve (without bringing it on gigs and working $@!& out) is too great.

I am going to put it up for sale. Thanks a million. BTW I am in toronto if anyone wants a vintage P-2-p wired amp!

Cheers and thanks again
