Crazy find! That seems to be a 1964. Pictures of the transformer stampings, pot stampings, circuitry --- would help determine if most of the amp was OEM. Do they have the original speakers that came with the amp? The original speaker wiring harness would be nice. As well as original foot switch.

This amp could command a lot of $$$. One of Fender most cherished models. Black face being the highest desired of the line.

The more OEM parts you can find, the higher $$$ you can ask. You get into the realm of collectors. Collectors will pay top $$$, for this amp, IF you have all original parts. As is, the family can get good $$$, but not top $$$. Check latest EBay prices for a starting point.

Maybe CL is the best bet, if you want to sell... as is. Get ppl to try the amp out. Most guitarists looking for SR's know the tone they are after. If the amp supplies that tone and flexibility --- you'll be able to get a good price.

Good luck! :D

+1

Perhaps $2K in its current condition. As mentioned, the speakers and their wiring harness are not original, nor is the grill cloth. Some gut shots of the chassis would be of immense help in determining the amp's true value. The date stamp on the tube chart seems to read "NK" which puts the completion date sometime in November of 1964.

IOW, it's a true pre-CBS survivor.

Btw, the grill cloth is original. Its brown from smoke, not because its replacement.

If so, a thorough cleaning will restore much of its luster and original color.

It looks like it'll need a couple of replacement snowman knobs as well.

Nice find SK, and I commend you for your morals by not taking the amp as it is worth around $1800-$2K in current condition. As Arjay stated a thorough clean up and even a new vintage style wiring harness, and footswitch and this amp looks ready for another 50 years of duty.

Keep us posted on what turns out with this one!

The pre-CBS status implies a $350 to $500 premium for any bonafide specimen.

Like it or not, that's an inescapable reality of the vintage amp market.

That amplifier is NOT a pre-CBS Fender.

Ahhh ! Ok you think 1964 worth more money than a 1965 ? Those years are so close . It is exactly the same amp . It is just on a paper Leo is not the owner of Fender.

You may be right .

I AM right -- that's the idiosyncrasies of the vintage amp market.

And no, I don't think it's necessarily worth more than the 1965 edition.

Your assertion is correct -- they are same amp (or were on the day they left the factory).

+1...The vintage amp market does have different layers to it. Arjay has hit on one, the Pre'-CBS label. My July of '65 Super Reverb amp even though all original (except one speaker that is date and period correct) and in near mint condition is not worth what solid used '64 of the same type would be. It is just one of those things that marks a slight turning point. The older the Amp period, the more $$ when it comes to Fender Amps. Price a tweed amp even in beat condition lately? Five years ago they were reasonable, now they have crossed over into the ridiculous range.

Indeed.

To a die-hard collector (many of whom cannot tune a guitar, let alone play one) the perception becomes reality and legend becomes fact, despite quantifiable evidence to the contrary. The transition from model year 1964 to model year 1965 is considered the "Rubicon" among Fender amp aficionados.
