Hey I recently tried out a used Fender Twin Reverb, and I loved the clean sound, but the amp was too loud for the stages I'm currently playing and for as often as I play, I needed something more portable. So I'm looking at the Deluxe reverb, which seems to be the same amp but with one speaker and lower watts. Does the Deluxe reverb also have a great clean tone? I've read a bunch of articles online talking about how the Twin Reverb is great for reggae, but I havn't seen anyone mention the Deluxe reverb as an alternative to the Twin? Thats my question: Is the Deluxe reverb a good amp for reggae music?

Hi ArtNature,

Those two amps are quite different in sound, much more difference than simply wattage. The DR uses 6V6 output tubes, has a different kind of clean sound, and it will achieve breakup fairly early on the volume dial (depending on the guitar/pups used), whereas the TR uses 6L6 output tubes and is always clean no matter the volume.

That's not to say that the DR wouldn't be good for Reggae, you'd have to try it and see if you like the sound, but it won't be anywhere near a TR sound.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

You can put 6L6 on DR too , more clean tone than original 6V6.

Heater current need for 6L6 is twice ( 0.9A ) than 6V6 ( 0.45 A) but I heard ( ? ) power transformer is enough powerful. To be confirmed

Im playing an american standard strat through a pedalboard. I go back and forth playing rhythm & lead so I like to have a clean sound when I'm playing rhythm but a slight overdrive when I'm playing lead. I found with the Twin, it sounded thin if I wasn't turned up to at least 3, and by the time I hit 4 I'm drowning out the rest of a 9-piece reggae band. I loved the spring reverb and the vibrato tho, and the clean of course, so I still want all that, but I was hoping with a deluxe I might have more room to come up into the mix and get warmth from the tubes without being too loud.

Another amp you may want to look at is a Vibrolux Reverb. I don't know how good the new '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb is, in terms of quality. A lot of negative posts of Fender's '68 Custom line, in general.

But, the VLR is something in between the Deluxe Reverb and a Super Reverb. You can crank it and not drown out the rest of the band. But, it does have the tone of the 6L6GC. Tube rectification. And two 10-inch speakers onboard. Great tone maker. Very flexible with pedals.

Just a thought. :D

+1

In their book, Teagle & Sprung proclaimed the Vibrolux Reverb to be the best amp ever developed for use with the electric guitar.

The Vibrolux is a great amp, but the reissues are very different sounding than the original BF or SF. It is punchier and darker than the originals. I would expect they were referring to the originals.
The Deluxe Reverb reissue is a good and faithful reproduction, both in circuit and sound. While the amp does use 6V6 outputs, 6L6s are commonly used without problems. Rebiasing is probably necessary for best tone.

Of course they were -- their book is titled "Fender Amps: The First Fifty Years".

FMIC hasn't built anything worthy of the Fender name in over a decade.
