Finally got around to testing some signal tubes. I used a 5F1 clone as test bed. These SE Champs tend to show weaknesses and strengths in signal tube, the best. IME. Played at "12." No tone controls. No boxes. MIM 1999 Telecaster. And 1994 Les Paul Standard.

Raytheon TMBP 5751 (square getter ring) --- tube in amp's input. Rich tone. Clean highs. Very nice harmonics. Quiet. By far, one of the best tubes to use as input.

Raytheon black plate JAN-CK 5755. Tube and adapter bought at Parts Connexion. Similar to the Raytheon 5751. Not as good bass. Clean mids and highs. Good harmonics. Could need some more break-in. Quiet.

Brimar gray plate mil spec CV4035 with adapter. Given to me to test from Tubemonger. Very clean mids and highs. Thin in the bass. Even more thin than the 5755. Ok with the LPS, weedy with the Tele. Not the rich harmonics of the Raytheon tubes.

JJ 5751. New production. Used as comparison. This is a very good tube. Not the bass and super clean highs of the Raytheon tubes. What it does reproduce is a well balanced tone. Not quite the rich harmonics of the Raytheon tubes. Better than the Brimar.

Best tube for this amp & my ears: Raytheon TMBP 5751. Next is toss up between JJ 5751 and the Raytheon CK-5755. Last is the Brimar CV-4085. All are good tubes. Better than most new production 12AX7s.

Interesting!

I will have to check out some of those Raytheon. I did miss some of the sparkling highs when I put the JJ 5751 in my newest amp, so I put 12AX7s back in, namely a TAD 7025WA in V1 and a TS RI in V2. Even though the JJs gave me a bit cleaner and warmer sound, it just lacked the sparkle, richness and harmonics that I really wanted. By comparison, the JJ 5751 dulled the tone in this particular amp, not horrible, just not what I really wanted from this amp.

Here's the link to Parts Connexion adapter + tube. The adapter fits the bottom part of the tube shield (attached to the socket) --- no problem. Top half of shield will no longer fit. Unless you have one for a 12BH7 or similar length taller tube.

I meant the 5751, sounds like it was the best of the bunch tested.

IMHO, the 1950-60s Raytheon 5751 family of tubes are some of the finest 5751 made. Whether it is the triple-mica, black plate square getter ring. Or the dual-mica, black plate "windmill" getter ring. Should have chalky red labeling. All are mil spec with either JAN-CRP or CK-5751 designations.

They used to be modestly priced for NOS. Hi-Fi guys "discovered" these NOS tubes in the late 1990s. They've skyrocketed in price, ever since then.

Good luck, in your hunt!
