Yes i do rate the Tungsol 12AX7 (ECC83) highly as ive fitted those in my Super Champ and it transformed the sound.
Im pretty sure the 2 6v6's are Tungsol too. (I may actually pull those and put both in the DR to test the power section.) Thanks for the advice on speakers too, although i think the underlying problem is somewhere else.
Ive heard the Weber 12F150 is also a good choice. I love the sound of my Marshall 50 watt head through 4x12 Celestion Greenbacks, but i really dont know if a 25w Greenback speaker would be compatible with a DR; early breakup etc and low wattage.
It will be this weekend before i can spare the time to experiment, but i will surely let you know how i get on.
Thanks again!

Just for shits and giggles, you might try checking the power-tube bias. These amps are shipped with voltage set notoriously low (in the interest of extending tube life) and the usual sonic result is a brittle, sterile tone at any volume level.

Dunno about the Greenback, but I've put the Vintage 30 into two silverface DRs. Very nice!

Umm interesting re the vintage 30. I reckon a Greenback would sound awesome.

Out of interest, where should the bias be sitting approximately with these amps? (I haven't biased a Fender amp for years!)

The optimum operating range for the DRRI's bias-supply seems to fall between 19.5 mA and 24 mA, contingent upon the brand of output tubes and the preferred tone.
