Hello. I have a fender "super reverb" combo amplifier (I cannot find the exact model online; on the back of the amp I can see something that looks like a serial number: "A 65392"). There's a very annoying hum when the amp is turned on, but it seems to be almost absolutely quiet when the volume is turned to max. Any solutions?

The serial number A 65392 would put the amp around 73 according to Superior Music.

But pics would make identity a little easier. As for the hum, are you a qualified tech? If not, when was the last time the amp was serviced? Might be time for new caps and a thorough bench check.

Welcome to the Forum!

As for that Super Reverb. Prologue: This is a great amp and worthy of proper restoration. But, you knew that.

1.) S/N A 65392 = 1973 production. From Superior Music site:

Super Reverb AB763, AB568, AA1069, AA270 (silverface)

A26000 to A29000 - 1967
A27000 to A35000 - 1968
A35000 to A45000 - 1969
A45000 to A49000 - 1970
A48000 to A54000 - 1971
A54000 to A59000 - 1972
A59000 to A66000 - 1973
A66000 to A77000 - 1974
A75000 to A78000 - 1975
A78000 to A80000 - 1976

2.) When were the filter caps under the doghouse and in the bias supply last replaced?

3.) Do you have photos of the transformer numbers & main and bias circuit boards? This will help in trying to see what maybe the issue.

4.) How old is the rectifier (prolly a 5U4GB) and the output tubes?

5.) Photos like these help:

+1

Likely the amp is due for maintenance and a tune-up. Find a qualified tech and have him perform a comprehensive overhaul.

Thank you all for your wonderful and helpful replies! :D

So, first of all, unfortunately I'm not a tech, so I can provide but little technical information. I acquired the amp circa '95, and because of numerous reasons - to my knowledge - it has not been serviced since; I also cannot tell when was the last time its previous owner actually serviced it.
I shot some photos of the amp, in hope that it can help you figure out something.

Amp Photos

The other thing is, I live in a small city in Greece, so I am almost 100% sure that there are no techs here that could service the amp. I'm thinking about sending it over to Thessaloniki or Athens (I googled some stuff and found some vintage tube amp technicians there)...if any of you - by any chance - know any technician who can service my amp in Greece, please do inform me.

Again, thank all of you for all the help. Much appreciated. :)

Thanks, for taking those photos.

1.) What we need are photos of the "606" stamped numbers on the transformers. Like this:

Image

2.) Someone has welded a plate over a side of the power tranny. Prolly, to try and reduce buzzing noises.

3.) The main filter caps are original parts and NEED to be replaced. The manufacturing day is "7312" = 12th week, 1973.

BTW... to post photos just copy & paste the IMG address to this area. Like this:

Image

4.) Some parts on the main circuit board have been replaced. Bypass caps and some resistors.

5.) The power transformer has overheated and burnt some of its wiring, at one time or another. Twisted heater line has been replaced. Please check the fuse. It may not be the correct amperage.

6.) I strongly suggest having the amp looked at by a good tech. I would not use it until someone of competence has seen it.

Good luck! Keep us posted. :D

Your last post was 8 months ago, did you have it serviced? I understand your difficulty having it looked at but if you have not had it done yet...

If yours is original MAKE SURE whoever does your work that you have them install a three wire power cable.

Thank you for the extra info! Actually, I found out that a friend of my father is a technician who has quite a lot of experience working on this type of amps, but unfortunately he didn't have the time to fix it yet. But I'll be sure to tell him that.
