I bought a 68' Custom Fender Twin Reverb brand new about seven months ago. It has stayed in the shop more than I have played it, so I solved the problem..

Going by the chassis number it looks like a 1972 to me.. When I pick it up in April I will get some gut shots posted..

Probably install some Eminence Lil Texas speakers in it, never really favored Peavey to much..

I am trying to track the history of this thing. I was told it was a stage amp for Jackson Browne, not sure if he used it or not.

This amp does not have the push pull for the master volume. I played it and it all works good. No hum or noise. It has the original foot pedal. Looking forward to getting this thing fired up in my studio.

I just got a 100 watt Weber Mini Mass for the 68, so that is gonna be handy now..

Do you think it would be a bad thing if I put two 16 ohm speakers in it and ran it at 8 ohms instead of 4 ohms?

I wouldn't do that or recommend it but that's just me.

Years ago I had a SFTR roughly of the same age and I pulled the reverb cables from the chassis jacks and installed an "Ice Cube" in their stead to give the amp some edge. It was a great sounding amp.

I guess I will stick with the original plan and just install two Eminence Lil Texas 8ohm. I installed one of those in the Musicmaster Bass amp I fixed up and it sounds really good in that thing. I finally got a chance to play with the Weber 100 watt Mass Lite with my Blues Deluxe. Wow, I like it better than the Weber Mini Mass. Much easier to dial in some good tone at lower db's that is well balanced for recording and it takes a lot of the hiss out of some of my noisy pedals.

I don't have any "ears-on" experience with the Lil Texas Emi's but if they sound anything like their Texas Heats I think you'll be pleased.

+1 on the Texas Heats, I have four of those speakers. The Lil Texas sound the same in my ears, I have a/b'd them with my Texas Heats. The Texas Heats are a pretty heavy speaker, so the Lil Texas should lighten up this 72 Twin Reverb up a bit to make it easier to handle.

You don't know "heavy" until you've wrestled a '78 ultra-linear Twin Reverb with a pair of JBL D120's. I've owned mine since it was new. Close to 116 lbs.

So I picked up the amp today and just put it through the motions. Holy crap! This thing is stellar. No hums, pops, crackles, loud hisses, just friggin tone. That master volume knob is pretty damn handy in tweaking the final volume. Right now it has a quad of Russian Sovtek 5881WXT and I am liking what I am hearing. Pretty sure they are from the early 1980's when he bought the amp. The Peavey Scorpions really do not sound to bad at all either. I did not think I would like them, but they may be keepers.

There is just no comparison to my new 68 Custom Twin Reverb. Two totally different amps and tones and the 72 Silverface totally wins.

I got a bonus, three good GE 6L6GC's with the 188-5 factory code...

Gut shots....
What does that ROCKAFELLOW stamp above the chassis stamp mean in the last photo?
Also there is a J. CASTILLO on the inside of the chassis..

Looks like it's "all there", MB.

I believe "J CASTILLO" was a chassis inspector who worked the assembly line at Fullerton. I've seen his name inside countless Fender amps.

Most of your iron dates to December of 1972 -- the amp may in fact be a '73 model.

By the Castillo stamp there is a stamped Jan 22 1973, so you are probably right..

It is one nice sounding amp and plays with my Zoom G5 and Zoom G3X pedals plugged into the front a lot better than my other tube amps except my Egnater Tweaker 15. I think I could plug a wet sock in the Egnater and it would sound good, that is a really cool amp..

I am not seeing any reason this Twin Reverb is considered to much for a bedroom amp, it can be dialed down with that master volume knob and it sounds pretty damn good at low levels with really good bass response and dynamics.

My 68 Custom Twin Reverb only sounds presentable at lower levels if I use my 100 watt Weber Mini Mass attenuator. That thing takes out the annoying idle hiss of that amp.

Have you seen the insides of the new 68 Custom Twin Reverb?

I haven't seen the innards of any of the Custom 68 silverfaces.
