Hi,

I have a Silverface Twin that I'm trying to date. It has the famous British band "Savoy Brown" stencilled on the back plate. I don't know if the amp belonged to the band guitar player.
I hope someone will be able to help.

I've pasted some pics of the amp.

Thanks in advance!

Impossible to date using the meager photos provided. One thing certain -- the amp appears to be an amalgamation of parts from different years. The cabinet is post-1970 while the front panel is exclusive to 1968. The add-on tranny (at the bottom of the enclosure) is non-standard as is the vertical brace in the center of the baffle board. The latter was likely a structural enhancement to help support those JBL's. The orange-stripe grill cloth was used in the '74 through mid '77 era. The treble knob in the vibrato-channel tone control array is a replacement from a Music Man amp.

In sum, what have you got?

Who knows.

The tranny numbers (if original to the chassis) might provide a clue.

Thanks for the feedback, Retroverbial. Very helpful. So I've got a FrankenTwin. :-)
The housing for the reverb tank was added by me to secure the reverb in place.
I can't read the number on the main tranny, because of a hole punctured in the middle of the serial.
All I can say is the combination of this amp + my strat sounds killer, and that's all that counts.

stratele52, as for the Strat, it's an early seventies Strat. Serial 529787. Neck final sand by J Torres. Neck number 09011014.
I thought it was from 1972, based on the serials, but the guy who did my last setup told me it was 73/74. Not sure if that's true. But anyway, it's a post CBS one for sure, so maybe not that valuable.
I'd be curious to know its current resale value though, if anyone can help. Condition was valued 6/10 recently.

Here are some pics.

+2

The speakers offer no clues as JBLs didn't use 'standard' date coding. Serial #'s were assigned by Geo. M. Lansing (J.B.'s brother) and recorded in a ledger. Supposedly, this ledger was destroyed in a fire at the plant on Casitas Avenue.

There is speculation that Nelson-Miller Dial and Plate Co. (suppliers of the foil labels) may have records which could narrow down dates to within a few months, but no such information is known to have been released.

cheers!

All good, thanks for your help. It seems it will be hard to put a date on that amp.

No photos of transformers, the circuit, potentiometers? That will help ID the date when the electronics were made.

Hello elkabyle I have a 1976/ twin reverb purchased new with the front looking like yours but with the master volume/distort on. The speakers are Fender J B Lancings No 27941. So your speakers pre date mine. Amp serial number should be on the right looking from the back next to the hum level adjuster

Hope this helps
