I recently acquired a 1980 Twin Reverb which was generously given to me by my Uncle. The amp works and it is very loud, but as I palm mute or strum the thicker strings on my guitar, I notice that there is a "rattle" sound that is quite noticeable. I'm having troubles to determine if it is because of bad tubes or bad speakers.

It is also worth noting that the there is a consistant "hum" sound that kicks in when the amp is on. When I put it on standby, the hum goes away. The volume of the amp does not have any affect on the hum. The hum is on one constant volume.

Also, I checked the tubes, only one of the power tubes are glowing, while only 2 out of 6 pre amp tubes were glowing. I switched the tubes that I knew were glowing into different sockets and they glow perfectly.

At this point I'm confident that the tubes are, bad but I'm just hoping to find out if the tubes are the culprit for the "rattling" sound when I play loudly or just simply play the thicker strings.

Thanks!

You have to try new good tubes and other speaker , there are no easy receipe if you are not a tech

Unmatched power tubes ? or need some news filter cap ? Thes amp may need some clean up in wires .

If some tubes do not work ( not glowing) , Your amp will not work and could'nt be powerfull

Check all amp's chassis , cabinet and speaker's screws
Thanks!

Stratele52 gave you some solid advice, if none of those things work, then a trip to a good amp tech is needed. The hum problem could also mean you need to replace the caps, especially if they are original to the amp. 34 years between servicing's is long enough.
