Never heard the ceramic version of the CTS 10-inch speaker. How does it compare to the alnico version? Maybe, a tad more efficient?

Steve...Here is a pic for ya. IMHO they have a bit more tightness in the bass response, otherwise they sound very close to the alnicos with just a touch less high frequency response...perfect for BFSR! These are the earlier swiss cheese basket versions. Later on they changed to ones like the alnicos.

The two on the left are original, the two on the right are period (date code) correct. I also have two spares of these too!

I can get new:

Jensen C10Q's shipped for $120CAD from "Musician's Friend website".

Weber's DT-10's are $221CAD($184US)+ shipping from Weber. I e-mailed Weber to see what re-cones they have in stock.

Which is the better deal factoring price as well? Are the Weber's worth the extra $120-$130? Especially for a newbie playing at home?

I also found a pair of matched 10 inch Vintage Alnico 8 Ohm guitar speakers used for $96CAD($80US) shipped. Code stamp on magnest are 12-14302, 767419, and on the frames 6419

Are these prices fair or should I be looking somewhere else?

The Jensen C10Q's advertised by Musicians Friend are the re-issued Made In Italy ones. I am not fond of these reissues. I recommend Made in USA (Chicago) true vintage P10Q. Like this one:

I am not familiar with Weber's DT series speakers. I recommend the 10A125, for your amp.

What do you guys recommend for replacement speakers?

WGS (Warehouse Guitar Speakers) the best bang for a buck, and top quality at the same time. :D

Yes OEM. The amp when I got it was completely original with the exception of the two speakers I replaced (an Oxford and an Eminence, both from the mid 70s)

Seems they used these ceramic CTS during '64/'65 for the most part, they used the alnicos during this time as well. As you know Fender had many speaker suppliers, Jensen, Oxford, JBL, in addition to CTS, at different times during the 60's. No one company could keep up with Fenders production or there were issues with product. We know Jensen couldn't keep up production wise (but a great Product) and at times had a contentious relationship with Fender.

Ebay for sure. Here is a great pair for your amp, all ready for mounting and cranking! Your amp deserves a good pair of speakers and since you are keeping the originals, these would be a good compliment to the amp.

Thanks Stratman. I bought them. Time is of the essence to get it up and running so my Dad can play it again so this is a quick solution. This way I can take my time and get the originals re-coned which will likely take at least a few months I'm guessing.
I'm pulling the board tomorrow and building the tester. If the tranny is just loose I'll tighten it up and I'll post pics of everything in case you guys see any problems with the board. I'll swap the speakers and try to fire it up with the tester plugged in.
My Dad said he was told by a fellow musician that these amps had issues with the boards overheating and warping. Any truth to that? Any recommendations on a gentle cleaning product for the knobs and outer case?
I can't believe a mint 65 VR just sold on Ebay for $6K. Wow I had no idea!

Thanks guys for all the help!!!!!

!!!

I don't follow all the post but if speaker need a re-cone ;

Re-cone the originals speaker by a qualified guy and play with them , no reason to store them apart and buy news ones.

It is less expensive and you keep original look.

The main and bias circuit fiber boards don't usually overheat. Boards warp as the amp ages and the fiber board dry out and become brittle. No problems with shorts, usually. The ones under the main PSU cap can get warm. Esp when the caps start to dry out and can't handle transient currents as well. Don't press down too hard on old boards. They can get damaged.

If you are having issues with the wires poking through both boards --- and contacting the chassis (shorting out) --- undo the hold down screws and GENTLY lift the portion of the board that has the contacting leads. Place a little contact glue or glue from a heat gun under the board. Let it set. Now tighten the hold-down screws gently onto the board. You may need slightly longer screws, if the board has lifted more than a few mm's off the chassis.

For the main PSU board (under the doghouse) --- I usually unsolder all leads (take a photo before doing this, to help reinstallation). Pull both boards off the chassis. Now, solder in the new caps onto isolated board. Trim the leads and remove all solder goop off the backside of the top board. Make sure nothing sharp (like a long lead) is poking out. Reassemble both boards and caps. Solder leads onto appropriate eyelets. Make sure the leads are trimmed and not too long.

I usually remove the separate bias supply board, too. This is the one with the dropping resistor, bias supply cap, and single diode. Solder parts onto board --- off the chassis. Remove excess solder and trim leads. Reinstall.

I think folks are finding that a good 32-36 watt tube amp is all you need for 90% of your work. When, recapped and speakers reconed (or new speakers), biased correctly --- the thing is loud pass "5." But, you'll get this wonderful output tube harmonics and complex tones that a 75-100 watt usually won't give you, at "5." These are great amps.

Congrats on the speakers, those will have some nice tone and that was a pretty good price.

For cleaning the knobs, I used a little bit of dish washing liquid soap and a soft cloth. I also used a soft tooth brush to get into the crevasses, but only use a soft cloth around the flange with the numbers on it as you can wipe those numbers off pretty easy. I used that same cloth to clean up the face plate, again be careful and go slow.

For the tolex I used a little 409 Spray, worked it in with another tooth brush and then used a separate soft cloth to wipe away the grime. I had to do this a couple times.

For the grill cloth Windex window cleaner works great. Take the speakers out and the amp logo too, spray the Windex on the grill cloth, but don't saturate it. Next take a clean cloth and wipe off the grill cloth, but just be careful and take it slow. You'll be surprised at what comes off!
