a real good friend has asked to buy one of my fender amps.
i have a 1964 fender bassman blackface aa864 w/o cab, a 1965 fender bassman aa165 with cab and 1967 fender showman w/o cab.

i also have a 1964 fender blonde bassman with cab, so if i keep the 64 then i have the last blonde and the first blackface with the blonde's cab to service each one.

if i keep the 65 aa165 with cab then i can sell the aa864 head and still have a set of blonde and blackface with cabs.

the showman is very quiet, powerful and the vibrato is great. if i sell it, then i still have all of the bassman amps with a couple of cabs.

what a quandry, huh?

note that i will not be gigging with any of this equipment as i can't lift them. ha!

let me know your recommendations and why.

play music!

mikeB.

What is the noise , hum , hisss .? With no no guitar.

Short answer, most common issue ;

1- Check & clean input shorting jack 's contact
2- Replace all 12XX7 plate resistors
3- Tubes may be noisy ( 12XX7 )
4 - Unmatched output tubes
5- Bias filter caps defective
6- Need some lead dress
7 - Filter caps ; what do you put ? Good quality ? Check polarity

hum with no guitar plugged in.

new tubes, all jj brand. i tested them on an old knight tube tester and i've swapped them into and out of other amps. the output tubes were matched.

new bias cap, 100mf, 100 volt

replaced filter caps are F&t brand. i've checked polarity.

note that i have NOT done any biasing.

i've used deoxit on the inputs and speaker jacks as well as the pots and the tube sockets. also tightened up the tension of the socket pins.

thanks, this is great information.

Tubes tester do not test tubes for noise , hum , and it is not reliable for testing tubes use in tubes amps .
Bias is a must

Contact cleaner may not fix jack input shorting contact

Some lead dress needed ?

Check heater center tap

Need to see a qualified tech

By the way check if amps use fuse with right specs . Too many vintage amps use wrong and amp is not protected

i've checked the fuses and they are correct.
yes, i know about the tube tester but it is all i have.

i've never done a bias so i'll have to figure out how that is done. i know about the bias pot, tho.

i also don't know how to check the heater center tap.

lead dress would be on the caps?

can't afford a qualified tech.

thanks again,
mikeB

Lead dress mean all wires ( on all the amp ) must be dress to keep noise / hum off the amp .

Look you have done, if no mistake , all easy work to the amp . Amp need a professional .

I agree, sell the showman. It will be the most expensive to maintain due to the amount of tubes involved......and if you don't have money for a tech, you'll have even less for tubes. So financially speaking, this is the one I'D sell. If you also factor in application, will you ever play a venue big enough to let that beast scream? The bassmans will be much more manageable and as stratele pointed out, more desirable in the long run...

Hope this helps.

MikeB,

Biasing your amp is pretty easy. All you need is a multimeter with aligator clips. I recently biased my amp for the firs time with some instruction from the guys on this forum. See my thread from a few weeks ago in the vintage amp page titled, "replacing filter caps." There are instructions there.

Note be careful when biasing your amp. You are dealing with lethal voltages inside the amp that can kill you.

+1K...and by keeping the Bassmans, you have a good backup in case something goes wrong on a gig with added benefit of being a similar amp tone wise. And having a Bassman cab already, your sound won't change using either amps and at most gigs you won't need the power of the Showman.
