Does anybody out there have any info on the transition period between blackface and silverface Deluxe Reverbs? I just picked up a silverface Deluxe Reverb yesterday with some interesting, yet slightly conflicting appointments. I bought this amp from it's second owner who says he bought the amp from an old friend who worked for Sam Ash in NY back in the 60s. According to both of them, the amp is all original.

This amp is stamped with a chassis serial that puts it in 1966, and its tube chart sticker and transformer stamp also jive with that. The grill cloth is a little peculiar (brownish in color, but still has blue stripes), and it has a JBL D120f speaker.

I was wondering if anybody knew of anything that could explain the oddities?

Fender started making SFDR's in 1968. So your amp maybe a BF with an SF faceplate.

Best to post photos of the ID numbers on the trannies, speaker, and control pots. As well as that serial stamp on the chassis. Like these:

Nobody's really sure the exact date that Blackface DR production ended and Silverface DR production began. It is even possible that both were produced simultaneously for a few weeks or months as available parts inventories were exhausted and accumulated respectively.

What we do know is the year and that is 1967. Despite the link posted by BMW, that site - Ampwares is incorrect as to the changeover year Blackface-to-Silverface on at least 4 Fender models that I've seen, including my own 1967 Blackface Deluxe. Ampwares lists the Blackface Deluxe production years as 1963 to 1966. Mine is one of 400 BF Deluxe Amps produced in 1967 (Tube Chart code QA). This model was discontinued in March of 1967 and no Silveface Deluxe Amps were produced.

The SN#s for '66 Blackface DRs were: A12000 to A19000 - 1966
The SN#s for '67 Blackface DRs were: A19000 to A24000 - 1967

The first Silverface DRs were produced in 1967 (thought to begun in late September) and had the SN#s: A24000 to A26000.

Your Amp has all the hallmarks of a 1966 DR.

BMW is correct in speculating that the faceplate has been swapped. Either because of a damaged one, or perhaps someone wanted the aesthetic of the Silverface.

There are correct replacement faceplates out there, though they're beginning to be more difficult to find.

It's probably worth trying to find one as the value of the Amp could be seriously affected w/ the SF plate on there.

cheers!

Thanks for all the info! Seems that some of my speculations about the amp might be correct. Any ideas on where I could find a correct BF faceplate? A quick search brings up a lot of sites that sell them without logos, so didn't know if you guys had any insider info. Thanks!

I'm working w/ someone right now who may do a run of Blackface faceplates. Specifically for an amp I'm restoring.

The problem is, he needs an original to work from. I'm sending him my blemished original, but it isn't a Deluxe Reverb. If it turns out well, I'm gonna commission a couple dozen and sell them.

I'll let you know if anything comes up.

cheers!
