i'm enclosing some photos to find out whether this is the aa864 circuit and what further replacement/repair should be done. i'll replace the 20uf caps for sure.
thanks,

so that i understand, 1. replace 2 prong with 3 prong. 2. cut death cap. 3. replace all 5 caps under can/lid. 4. replace 2 brown caps under chassis, one is 25uf, 25volt, and other, by the diodes, also 25uf, 25volt, with 100uf, 100volt.

this circuit does have the hum control pot, correct? so i will have to set it by listening to the least amount of hum?
thanks again,
mikeB

Fender was notorious for not putting the correct tube labels into amps, especially as they changed over models, so going by the tube chart can be quite misleading.

I think your amp is an AA165.....but of course there is always the never say never with Fender!

By all means change out those caps under the doghouse they have "BB'd" out and one is even leaching through.

FWIW

I think your Bassman is actually an AB165. It looks quite similar to my '66 Bassman head, and 1965 was the change over year....and of course there is always the never say never with Fender!

everything about the amp indicates 64 but perhaps it was an early one transitional one. it is funny how this one does appear different than my other one i've posted about also. this is supposed to be an aa864 that may actually be an ab165 while the other one that is supposed to be an aa165 may actually also be an ab165 even tho the circuits appear different. if that is the case, i'm pretty sure it was a supply situation--whatever they could source. ha!

play music!

thanks for the information.

This amp is an AA165. The AA864 had a GZ34 Tube Rectifier IIRC. Since this amp was built in the 52nd week of '64 they were probably already moving away from the Tube Rectifier on the Bassman amps.

I too own a Blackface Bassman...a '66 and it is an AB165. These are great amps and I love mine.

here is the schematic for the aa864. i don't notice a tube rectifier in it. i do see the diodes in the bottom right. man, this is confusing. i'm probably going to have a hard time figuring out which one to sell once i get them in proper working order. ha!

Does not appear to be one in that schematic. A book I have says there should be one there. I pulled out my Dave Funk Book of Fender schematics...sorry I was thinking about the earlier 6G6 with the GZ34. I still think you should keep the FEIC AA165...but your call, especially if you have the matching cab!

i have one matching cab but i need to pull the panel and see which amp it goes with. that will probably make my decision for me. plus, i do have a 64 blonde with cab so, it would be nice to have the last blonde and the first blackface, if in fact the amp is an aa864.
thanks,
mikeB

by the diodes, also 25uf, 25volt, with 100uf, 100volt.You mean the bias caps ? it is mostly a 50 MFD 50 volts, put 100mfd 100 volts
Check polarity before removing old caps check , check check

You may learn how to do bias , it is a bias pot , there is no hum adjustment
thanks again,

Your two amps look they had see the same guy wich do same kind of job a copy

Do same job on both with quality caps
