I'm really digging the clean tones I am getting from my deluxe reverb (1980). However the driven tones via my overdrive pedals are a bit harsh. Maybe too bright would be the best way to describe it. Since the amp is new to me I am not sure if it is a result of the tubes being used, my OD pedals or the speaker, So I am turning to you guys for some opinions and advice.

The current speaker in it is a Jensen C12K.

What are your experiences with this speaker in this amp?

What speaker are you using in your DR?

I want to maintain the cleans i am getting but get a warmer, fuller sound when driven. I reached out to Weber and they recommend a 12F150B.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Try an alnico magnet speaker. Like a vintage US made Jensen P12R or P12Q. Or a modern Weber 12A125A.

Alnico magnet speakers in the DR give it a more vintage tone. IMHO.

I'll look up some sound samples for those. In the meantime I checked out Jensens site. Looks the C12K is a 100w speaker. Seems a bit excessive for DR. Wondering if that also has something to do with the sound. As if the speaker doesn't want to distort as easily therefore contributing to a less than stellar overdrive.

Try to look for a vintage US made Jensen speaker. Even if it needs re-coning. I think you'll be happier in the long run (versus the Italian made Jensen's).

A 100-watt rated speaker may not give the harmonic tonal structure you seek. Cone rib designs has an effect, too. I've replaced the OEM speakers in DR and DRRI's. The Weber 12A125A sounds very good. No doping, 30-watt option.

What is a fair price for a vintage US made Jensen?

Looks like somewhere in the neighborhood of $100-150, each. With good speaker cones.

That's your speaker. Grab 'em quick before someone else does! These don't come up often... C12NA is what I have in my DR. The sweetest cleans you can ask for IMO.

Buy the pair, send them to Dusty, $60-80 to recone each I think, keep one, sell the other for $200+

+1K...That was some damn fine advice there Cedar! Great speaker! Outside of a P12R, this is my favorite 12 inch speaker! The pair in cab on my 66 Bassman sound freaking awesome, should be excellent in a Deluxe!

That route is a little out of my budget right now. Assuming I picked them up for the starting bid, plus shipping and a low estimate of $60 ea. for a re-cone puts north of $250 when you add the shipping cost of re-coning.

While I appreciate the suggestions, I am starting to think I should follow BMW's advice from another thread and start with replacing the caps. That being said keep the suggestions coming. I am having a hard time finding a sound sample for the C12NA. I guess do to their rarity.

P12N.....orig
C12N......orig
EV12L...

my 3 speaker experiences with a 74 DR. All good but The EV is the $@!& for classic rock and blues IMO. Handles everything you throw at it with great tone and dynamics.
You lose a bit of low volume Fender "chime" but other than that......its solid 10!!!

Here's a sample for ya... that IS a C12NA, it's in a DRRI though, I now have it in my '75 DR.
