OK I know this has most likely been kicked around before and I hope this is the right place to ask. OK here I go:
I have a 1969 SFSR and some SS amps old and new, the SFSR I love but it is way more (loud and heavy) than I need, I am not getting rid of it just want something I can lift and crank to the sweet spot without wearing earplugs (69 SFSR sounds nice at 6 but I can't be in the same room with it) So I am thinking that a Princeton Reverb may have similar quality's as my SR, am I wrong about this, if I am what amp would be close to SR without the volume and weight.

Now I have been looking around and I am seeing that the vintage ones are around the same price as new ones and a lot of times a little more. Are the older ones that much better?

I am going to go to GC and try out an amp or two unfortunately they don't have a lot of vintage amps but they have new ones
I am also interested in trying out a Vibro-Champ only problem is I don't think it has reverb, which has become part of my sound.

I know this is not the modern amp site, but any thought on the EC Vibro- champ compared a vintage one
Thanks

I'd try both VC and PR. The vibrato channel of the VC is one of the best. You can really crank that VC to get sweet 6V6GT harmonics. Some PR have surprisingly nice reverb tones.

Yes that is my intention to try both, and at the same time I can only hope they have some vintage ones to try

I would also add a Tremolux to that list. I think you like the sound of the 10 inch speakers, 6L6s, and the GZ34 rectifier tubes. You would have separate head and cab combo to make it easier to transport (and not but half the weight) and the 35 watts is loud enough to gig with but not overpowering. This might be a bit closer to what you are after than a 6V6 Princeton.

T2Stratman Thanks you are probably right about the sound, but I need less wattage, as my SFSR is 40 and too loud for practice and if I ever have a gig in a larger venue I would bring the SFSR or mic the practice amp or both, but I do not see that in the near future. I will definitely plug into a Tremolux while I am at it if there is one in the store when I go try them out.

+1 on a nice SF Princeton Reverb.

There are lots of nice ones out there for relatively small money, like my '73:

One owner, sub $900 pricetag !

Are you practicing with a band or by yourself? If by yourself give the vibro champ a try. It's a lot louder than most people think. I've never played a Princeton (yet). :) I suspect it may be a better option if you are practicing with a drummer.

I practice mostly by myself, and I hope to go out this weekend to a music store and try some, if I can take the traffic and crowds of people doing the holiday thing. I may wait until after to avoid that, I'll see how it goes

I was in the same boat, having found the Super to be too loud for home use. There isn't any sense in owning an amp that you can never run at it's sweet spot, regardless of how glorious the potential is.

Now I run a strat straight into a SFPR, volume at 4. That's enough volume to be able to stand in front of the amp for as long as you wish without ever hurting the ears, and the amp isn't choked by having the volume turned down.

I guess my big issue is do I wait for the vintage PR or VC to show up or do I go for a brand new one for the same money. I suppose if the vintage ones cost nearly as much as a new one, could it really sound and be better than new purchase, and even a bigger issue I just can't go out an try vintage ones to compare.
I am trying to get to one of the box music stores any one of them is about 1hour away, as the smaller ones seems to not be able to carry fenders unless they get a used one in, and that becomes hit and miss. Well at least if I try a new PR and a new EC VC I might be able to figure out which one I like more and than again I might like them both the same, and than I am in big trouble

Sonically they will sound a little different (to a guitar player). The modern version is loaded with a different type of speaker. I believe they are using Celestions.

What you will get from a vintage amp is a handwired circuit versus a printed board. The benefit to this would be easier maintanence.

Also the vintage amp would be worth more if you ever decided to sell it. Case in point, the vintage models are currently selling for the same price as a new one. Here is one on ebay.

There is a third option, which would be to build one and post pics of your progress. :P

If it was me I would hold out for a vintage model or build one.

Oh I did not realize that the new PR were printed circuit boards does that go for the 65 and the 68. I see that the EC Vibro champ is point to point any thought on this one, either way I think I am leaning toward the PR and I might just wait for a deal on a vintage one

Yes.

The EC is a different animal. It depends what you're after. IMO it's the most expensive 20 or so parts you will ever buy.

No doubt about it! Add an artist's name to the model and the price doubles at a minimum. :? It's too bad you don't sound like the particular artist when you buy the signature model. "name plate mojo"

You have a big point on the lack of parts for that kind of money
