I've got my eyes set on the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Reissue.

I've always used separate heads and cabs, but I've always been attracted to the silver face Fenders cosmetically and now that they've been reissued I love the idea of the convenience this light and portable combo offers.

I play in a loud funk rock band. The bass player has a very bright tone (Flea type) whereas I prefer a dark, throaty tone, so we often compete for the same frequency.
I find that the best way to cut through is by using less gain and play almost clean (or apply some light crunch via pedals to solo).

I currently use a Mesa Express 5:50 plus which has great cleans and headroom.
How would the 68 CDRR compare on the clean headroom? I heard that it was voiced to crunch up at lower volumes, which is not what I want as I use pedals for dirt.

I guess my question is how loud can the 68 CDRR stay clean before it gets dirty? For my purpose if needs to stay clean up there with a loud drummer and very loud / bright bass.

Thanks

I'm just going to throw this out there. Form what you've described, a '68 CDR (It's not a re-issue, it's a "custom" issue), will not meet your needs, unless you're miking of course and then you're reliant on the sound guy. I'm sure you know this but mid's are what cut through in a mix with a guitar. I think if you play loud, look at the '68 CTR instead. I think I saw a CTR with a 15" somewhere as an option from Fender, but that could have been in the '65 re-issue line.

It's not a reissue. :x

I offer my humble apologies to the purists for my erroneous description of this amp. It is not a reissue! I hope that settles it.

The 68 Custom Vibrolux looks indeed interesting and with 13 more Watts it may just be ticket. Thanks for the tip, upnorth! I guess the reason I had not looked at it thus far was due to the 2x10 speaker configuration (which I had assumed would be pokey in sound and heavy on the back. But at 19Kg, it's the same weight as the CDR so that's a pleasant surprise.

Those who own it (or have heard it) can you comment on its sponginess and bounce (which is what I am looking for)? I like the sound of the 68 CDR, so I was just wondering if it projected the same feel.

Thanks

Since you are referring to a modern amp, not vintage, check the modern amp section of the forum, there are a few threads about these amps.

I must have had a total blackout when I posted my thread yesterday, because I was convinced I was posting in the Modern forum! What a dipstick! Is there a way to transfer the thread over to the Modern one?
Thanks

Only the moderators can move a thread. No biggie, just check the modern section, and if no existing thread answers your questions, start a new one there.

Original VR's aren't known for their clean headroom. Not sure about the new custom VR's.

VR? Did you respond to the wrong thread, or just a brain-fart?

He had mentioned a Custom Vibrolux Reverb above in his reply. But thanks for reminding me how often the "brain farts" are evident.
