Yoma, imbalance is pretty much inevitable, overtime. My guess is that your OT is spot-on, given modern building tolerances. The long tail phase inverter is just the end result of earlier efforts to split, drive, and reverse the polarity of the preamp signal -- via capacitors, resistors, and a tube -- to the power tubes. The criteria was the lowest distortion, most power distribution, and economics. If the technical explanation is what you're after, there are plenty of articles on the net. Try, "paraphase", "self-balancing paraphase", "cathodyne","split-load" and "long tail" phase inverters. If you take a look at the schematics of Fender 5D, 5E, up to 6G models ...you'll see the different circuit's progress. JMHO, Art

Everyone every try a 12AU7 in the PI position? For lower onset of OD. Cleaner tone?

Just a thought.

Steve, never tried a 12AU7!!! Louis, did give a NOS Tesla E83CC (gold pin--low hours) a test in the PR clone. Pulled a RCA 12AX7A that was matched(from Gregg Levy at Hi-Test), but over 1 yr old. Don't know if that's a fair test ? The Tesla is kind of sterile at lower guitar volume(amp at 6), compared to the RCA's depth. Raising the guitar volume....the Tesla has slightly more harmonics(especially when pinching the strings). Amp at 8 and guitar over 75% volume, it's hard to tell the difference(so much OD )!!! The amp is a Vintage Sounds 15 with a 12" Weber alnico. The guitar is a '89 American Standard Strat with Vintage Lindy Fralin PUPs( neck pup, and neck-middle pup for the test). I'm not convinced that it matters that much!!!! And in a band mix ????? JMHO, Art

Art, do you have access to a tube tester? Low hours, or not, kinda sounds like the Tesla maybe a bit weak. 12AX7's that are starting to get tired tend to sound dry and lifeless, compared to strong testing ones. RCA 12AX7A (another name for their 7025) last forever. Many years. Any borderline weak tube is going to pale in comparison.

IME, strong Tesla E83CC sounds a lot like Raytheon BP 12AX7A. A bit cleaner top end than a healthy RCA 7025. The RCA has the bass-mids that few other tubes has. Maybe, a very good 5751 (like windmill Raytheon) is close.

Tube tester? Yeah, Steve, me and a couple of amps  At low guitar volume(33%), the Tesla seems to be standing guard over the power tubes. With more guitar signal it opens up more(like you said) with the upper-mids and high-end. The RCA doesn't seem to care so much. It's pretty open, no matter the guitar signal. You know, those PUPs don't have a whole bunch of push, anyway!! Art
