I have been on this forum for a few years now but never ventured into this section before. oops!

Two weeks later I am the proud owner of a black face Vibro Champ all the way from Italy. Sadly it doesn't make any noise at all.

The valves all appear to light up, the speaker lead seems sound (sic) but no sweet sound.

Where shall I start checking please?

Sorry about the amp's problem. VC's are simple devices and are usually easy to fix. Step-by-step is the way to go.

First off, did the owner say the amp was fully working, when he sold it? This is the most important question about the amp.

Second, is the amp wired to "see" 220VAC/50Hz power source? Do they use the same outlet power in the UK, as in Italy?

Third, check the speaker. Use a 9-volt battery to check that the voice coil is ok.

Fourth, pulled each tube, one-by-one. Spray a bit of good contact cleaner on the pins and into the sockets. Reinsert each tube, one at a time, to avoid misplacement. You may need to insert the tube a couple of times to work any corrosion off the contacts. The tubes may light, but the signal may not pass through. As different pins function to heat the tube (light the tube) and amplify the signal.

Spray the input jacks, too.

* Be sure your guitar's volume control is set to halfway or more. * Just saying. :D

If the amp was supposed to work. Wired for the proper outlet. And the speaker works, guitar setting is ok, tube contacts cleaned --- and it still doesn't work --- you'll will need to test the continuity within the amp. Such as the input jack's continuity. Report the results of first four suggestions. You need to rule-out these common issues with used amps. As well as, Foreign bought.

Good luck!

Excellent!

I had the tubes out previously so looked elsewhere.

I tried the 9v battery but no joy. Tested the battery on my meter, dead battery.

I tried sending my orange TT through to the VC speaker and nothing. So I tried the VC to my 1 x 12 and bingo. You do know what bingo is don't you?

So thanks. Now can I get the speaker refurbed, the cone looks fine.

Forgot to say that the amp was 'apparently' working fine and that I am using a step down transformer.

Shaky, good news! :D

There are a lot of good 8-inch aftermarket speakers out there. I would not spend $$$ to recone (and refit a new voice coil) in that OEM speaker. It doesn't stand out as a great speaker.

Maybe like a Weber Sig series or Vintage Series?

I have the Weber Sig8S. The ribs allow more volume before breakup. These speakers may be the best value in speakerdom. The EC Champ model uses the Weber Sig8 speaker in them. A 48 dollar speaker in a 1000 dollar amp. In this case Fender is not cutting corners. Only an Alnico hemp coned speaker would be sweeter to my ears. The Weber Alnico 8's make for some seriously good tone and articulation.

Congrats on a fine looking amp! It is quite the clean one! Might I suggest a Kendrick Blackframe 8 for it. Great speaker for these, I have one in my '68 Champ and it screams!
