As I learned this weekend...drive quickly, bring cash, don't ask questions.

It's probably already gone.

+1

The early '80s Super Champ was a helluva nice design. A shame that it was only made for a couple of years. Seven bills is a skosh below average for that model -- if it's still available for sale, it'd be worth taking a drive to give it a look-see.

Arjay, is this Super Champ one of the Fender amps that uses the 6C10 compactron tube?

Thanks!

Indeed it is......a triple-triode was the only way to cram the extra gain stage into the already-cramped chassis. The 6C10 is somewhat rare but they can still be found for $25 or so from the "usual suspects".

Thanks all, I decided against the Super Champ after looking at the video's, and deciding there are other options out there, brand new. Like the Rivera Clubster. And other ones for only a few hundred more dollars. I really do not like the Super Champ X2 I have, it is Ok, but just OK. My Hot Rod Deluxe is a great amp with the C-Rex speaker, I just wanted something all tube the size of the SCX2. However the SCX2 is a monster recorded with a SM57 in front of the hemp cone speaker, both clean and overdrive, that goes out to the studio if I do buy the Clubster or other club sized amp.

The '80s-era Super Champ bears NO RELATIONSHIP WHATSOEVER to the contemporary SCX2. None at all (except for the "hood ornament").

Of course, I knew that already, I have a friend who has one. I simply changed my mind as to what I want in a grab and go amp. Plus whatever people say, I actually like the tones of a modern amp more than the old ones. I have had almost every model of the Fender classic lines (never had a Super Reverb), but twins, several of those, deluxes, several of those, a Pro Reverb, and a black face bassman plus several others. Of all of the Fender amps I ever owned I like the clean channel of my Hot Rod Deluxe more than any of those oldies but goodies.

The SCX2 is a decent amp for something to carry about and not really care much about it. It is not band capable as far as I can tell. But it actually records some monster tones when miked up with the Hemp Cone Speaker.

Bottom line. I will keep on lookin for what I want, I am in no hurry. I am liking the Rivera Clubster for today, we shall see what a new day brings.

The Super Champ, does have some fine classic fender clean tones, but it also could get some real grit to it too! One thing you might want to consider...the Super Champ will continue to go up in value, the Rivera Clubster may not. You should at least go and try it out, my guess is if you do, you may forget all about the Rivera.

Just a thought.

Well my Petillo guitar delivered today to his son, apparently without damage, so that frees up the money I got for it. I asked the guy with the SC to e-mail me Thursday (Tomorrow) if he still has it. Trouble is, it is in a seedy side of town, I will have to go armed. (Which is no problem for me we are allowed to concealed carry a firearm here in Arizona if you are a resident here.) Plus I made sure that he understands that when we do the deal it will be in my bank where he will have to show his ID so we can do a notarized sold letter from him to me. If he is legit, he will get back to me tomorrow.

I don't really care about investment for a bigger return on my money some time in the future, I am 71 years old ,I just want good tone......... And I am willing to pay for it, and I don't really care how much I do pay for it, or if the amp retains it's value, as long as it has the tone I am looking for.

Good luck and let us know how it goes, DBM.

Be sure to leave your weapon in the car when you visit the bank to consummate the deal. I don't wanna hear about any "imperial entanglements" on the five o'clock news.

Not a problem, the gun will never leave the under my car seat position. I will have no cash when/if I demo the amp at his house. I did study Wing Chun Kung Fu. So I am not defenseless, although I would rather not get into an altercation at all. Violence is ugly even if you have to defend yourself. I'd prefer none occurs, but better safe than sorry.....
