Yes it is, actually the baffle is still in great shape. What I meant was that the grill frame, which is velcro'd on, is broken at two places. The only thing keeping it together is the cloth material and the velcro.
I'm thinking of cutting out a new grill frame and I'm hesitant about using the particle board/mdf. My thinking is that plywood would last a h3!! of a lot longer. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I would cut the entire baffle out, sand the dado areas flush to the inner surfaces, install a proper set of pine cleats, then build an all-new baffle board to pre-1971 specs and attach it conventionally with screws.

Baltic birch pywood is the best material for baffles and grillcloth framing due to the amount of ply's used. It's very rigid and more importantly, straight. This website has it available in smaller sizes.

That's not the material specified by Leo.

Standard composition for a piggy-back cab's baffle board is ½" MDF with the grill frame and logo shelf fabricated from ¼" strips of pine (or poplar) one inch wide. Fender discovered early on that plywood baffle boards and rear panels used with a sealed bass-reflex enclosure produced unwanted-and-audible resonances within the cab. Hence the use of MDF with its enhanced damping properties.

And here I thought Leo was just being cheap. Guess I'm in tweed mode. I just have never been a fan of fiberboard (unless it's in a bonfire) but it makes sense as far as density goes. Although I have built some trap cabs from birch plywood and they've done well.

Good Lord, don't stand downwind of that conflagration! MDF is loaded with toxic and carcinogenic compounds that the human body does not tolerate well.

I haven't eaten a weiner in forty-five years, after reading Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" in college.

It's amazing what additives, or should I say byproducts, are in them. It's almost like new solid state amps.

At least those new solid-state amps won't kill you.

Original Pignoses contain no GMO's.
