I prefer a re-coned vintage speaker over any contemporary driver.

Arjay,

Are there any new made instrument speakers that can truly handle the wattage of a classic JBL? The 12-inch and 15-inch models could handle something like 70 watt, continuous. Which is a more conservative rating than most manufacturers used these days.

Thanks!

JBL's are not the proverbial "Sampson" in the power-handling department despite legends, rumors, and old-wives' tales to the contrary.

*Continuous* capability for the original D-series musical-instrument drivers:

D110F -- 25 watts RMS
D120F -- 35 watts RMS
D130F -- 35 watts RMS
D140F -- 50 watts RMS

For the "E" and "K" models, double those figures.

For the K15S bass driver, 125 watts RMS.

The "G" variants hold no interest for me whatsoever thus I have no data for them.

Arjay,

Thanks for posting the info on the RMS ratings on the JBL speakers. I was wondering what the D140F was rated at.

Do you remember what the wattage rating is on my Showman Reverb Amp ? (Note: It is not a Dual Showman).

Thanks

Jerry

Rated for eighty-five watts, easily capable of one hundred.

Arjay, thanks for the power info. Not sure how continuous power differs from RMS. Think RMS is the most conservative power rating.

As for JBL's. I had a subwoofer array of four 130A 15-inchers driven by a bridged SAE 2500 amp (500 watts total). Active and passive crossovers kept anything over 320 Hz from passing into the speakers. So that prolly saved the speakers from early destruction. Bass was very tight. Not boomy. Pink Floyd DSOM delight.

A funny thing with solid-state versus tube amps. Same time I made this hi-fi subwoofer amp, a friend built one using an Ampeg SVT. And that SVT had noticeably more transient power than the SAE. I think he scoped that SVT at something like 320 watts at 120Hz. Wonder what that Fender 400PS would do?

No it is not.

Consider this practical situation where you play a single, full chord at an amp's maximum volume level using an electric guitar. Whatever that amp's power output, you've reached it and that reproduced signal represents an RMS transient peak.

Now, take that same dimed amp but with a keyboard plugged into it (say a synth or a stage organ) then play a sustained chord and hold it. That is a continuous signal and the speaker will reproduce that chord until you release the keys or it self-destructs.

Thus, the difference between measurement specifications.

It took me long enough; I finally got off my butt and decided to go ahead and install my JBL speakers and wait until a later date to install new grill cloth.

Not a lot of work and not hard work, but for an old dude like me, it is hard working on my knees and doing a lot of bending. At any rate, it is done!

Just did a 30 minute sound test today and from what I can hear, the JBLs are living up to their reputation. Now I'm not so handy with all the adjectives describing a guitar tone or amplifier's sound, but the sound was clean, clear and accurate (I could really hear my mistakes  ). Put the volume on 6 just for a couple of minutes and I did shake the windows in my practice/office area.

I am really pleased with these speakers.

Thanks Tony! Yes, I really do enjoy the tones from the old Showman and the new JBLs.

BMW2002Ti,

Thanks. Neighbors haven't had a chance to hear any bass runs yet. I haven't tested my P Bass on it as of yet, but I will soon. It sounds just fine with my Jazzmaster.
