I have always wanted JBL D140F speakers for my Bandmaster cabinet. I changed the 12" original speakers to 15" CTS bass speakers back in the 70s.

Well, I finally picked up two used speakers, one from e-bay and the other from craiglist:

Took the speakers to Orange County Speakers in Garden Grove, CA to be re-coned. I think they did a great job.
Got them back a couple of days ago:

Now, on to the task of putting new grill cloth on my Showman Reverb amp and Bandmaster cabinet and then installing the newly re-coned JBLs.

Already have the grill cloth for the amp and cabinet:

Gonna be a great sounding rig once completed, Jerry!

Jerry & Arjay,

Very nice set of JBL's. :D

How does the D140F differ from the D130F?

Thanks!

Thanks Arjay! I'm sure it will. I will post progress photos as I move along.

Steve,

The D140F is a bass speaker.

Jerry, nice speaker score...with JBL's being pumped by that Showman Reverb...you can really drive your neighbors crazy!
Look forward to the build.

Great find, did you have them reconed as D140F's or D130F's? I had a couple Oxford's reconed by Orange County Speakers, they do great work.
Thanks for sharing.

Nikola Tesla & T2Stratman,

Thanks for the nice comments.

T2 - When I play loud, I keep it short so not to disturb the neighbors too much :D
Haven't had any complaints so far.

socal323,

I agree, Orange County Speakers did a great job on the speakers.

I had them re-coned as D140Fs. At this point, I intend to primarily use the amp for guitar, but I do own a P-Bass and no doubt, I will drag it out once in a while and make some thumping noises

Thanks! What makes the D140F more suited for bass? Heavier voice coil? Heavier speaker paper?

Steve,

Hopefully Arjay will come back and elaborate. I do know that the D140F has a copper voice coil and a ribbed cone (the D130F has a smooth cone and I don't know what the voice coil is made of). You can do a google search for Harvey Gerst. He is the original designer of the JBL F series speakers. There's lots of info out there, but I didn't find any specific info on what make the D140F a bass speaker other than what I stated already.

Thanks, Jerry. From JBL site:

Q. A couple more Q's & I'll leave you alone - Didn't know the D140F has a copper voice coil - is it an edgewound ribbon like the aluminum coils? What were the reason(s) for using copper (vs. aluminum) in the D140F?

A. Yes, the D140F had an edgewound copper ribbon voice coil. Copper has better heat conductivity than aluminum (think pots and pans) but it's heavier and not as responsive to high frequencies, due to it's weight. For use in woofers, copper is the wire of choice.

Actually, had I thought about it some more, I should have probably made the D140F more of a full range speaker, but it was basically designed as a replacement for people using D130A woofers for live music.

Harvey Gerst

Are you going to use the Showman for bass use? Or bass and lead?

I plan to use the Showman mainly for rhythm and lead. I do have a P-Bass and no doubt at some point I will be fooling around with it from time to time. Didn't want to take a chance of blowing D130F speakers if I had put those speakers in the amp.

I currently have 15" CTS bass speakers in the cabinet, which I will sell.

Aaah' the excitement of re-coned speakers. I'm now totally convinced that "petrified by age" spiders and cones kill the tone of a good speaker. Good re-coned vintage speakers will still be around years from now, waiting for the next rebuild.
