Hi all,

I have a 1968 fender twin (that for some reason was put into a silver face cabinet) that has vintage fender blue label speakers. One of them I have pulled out and know for sure is blown, but the other speaker has no sound whatsoever coming through it whether both speakers are plugged in, or just the one speaker by itself. Im looking to buy some new speakers for it, but I'm wondering could the reason no sound is coming through be that the speaker is defective, or is it a different problem? I'm hoping for an easy fix!

Thanks!

A 1968 Twin Reverb is a silverface era amp.

Sounds like you have two blown speakers. You can test the speaker's VC by using a 9 volt battery.

Correct -- the silverface era actually began in the spring of 1967.

You've likely got two blown drivers -- not uncommon with the Twin Reverb and its robust output. Your speakers are likely the Oxford 12T6 and if original to a 1968 amp will be marked "465-8XX" on the rim of the basket or on the frame. Whichever replacement speakers you decide on, consider only those with at least a 75-watt power-handling capability (each).

I must have been confused on what I was thinking of, my apologies. And I did check it and the issue is with the speaker.

You said 75 watts each, and this may be a stupid question, but why is that? I had been looking at some celestial vintage 30's which is why I'm asking (they're only 60 watts each I believe).

You've got a 100-watt amp there (despite what's marked on the rear-panel's speaker output jack). My rule-of-thumb for safety and longevity is to install speakers whose total power-handling capability is 50% more than the max rated power of the amp. Likely there will be no hazard with the Celestion V30's but I would not dime the amp for extended periods. To install Celestion's you'll need to remove half of the mounting studs in the baffle board for each of the speaker cut-outs. Use caution to prevent perforating or tearing the grill cloth.

Ok, I'll stick with the v30's then I don't think I'll be pushing them extremely hard. I appreciate all of your help & quick responses!

If British voicing is your preference you might take a look at some of these......

I honestly don't know much about speakers, except for that I played on the V30's and they're extremely bright and tinny.

Arjay: any other suggestions that would be similar to the fender blue labels? I've heard mismatching 2 different speakers can create a pretty good sound

Weber's "High Power" Chicago 12 ceramic might be just the ticket. They're good for 80 watts each and should yield a vintage Fender tone. The alnico version will sound a bit warmer with more organic compression and OD.

I'm happy with my Warehouse G12C's in a Bandmaster cab under my Showman, so those could be worth a try. In my Bandmaster combo, I have the Warehouse G12C/S and love those as well.

+1

I believe the G12C/S would do particularly well in the open-backed Twin Reverb cabinet. And at 75 watts each, a pair would provide an adequate margin of safety.

May I suggest you take a look at WGS ET65's.

These sound very beefy, especially when pumped up.

Sorry to bring this post back, but I ended up trying the celestion V30's and found them to be too bright for my liking. I just picked up a pair of 8 ohm warehouse g12c/s speakers and put them in my twin. However, they sound awful, in terms of them breaking up at low volumes. I'm not sure if I picked up the wrong speaker ohms, or something needs fixed in my amp, or I got a pair of lemons. Any thoughts?

Thanks

No speaker is going to "break up" at low volume. You need to light them up with close to their max rated power in order to drive them hard enough to hear such grind.

Exactly, but that is the sound that is coming out. I am right in having two 8 ohm speakers?

It is due for a checkup by a tech.
