I was afraid you'd gone "organic" on us.

Cap I am impressed. Truly a nice job. With skills like that, you should NEVER buy a new mass produced amp!

T2Stratman, I prepared myself by doing a lot of research on this and other forums. I possess mechanical skills from my childhood up, family machine shop, carpentry, plumbing, residential electrician trainee, hobbies etc. Used to wind motors for HO Cars and solder all the small pieces, have soldered many times through the years. I did my own mods on my amps and it got me accustomed to working with them. I studied the basic ways of draining caps before I even pulled a chassis. When I worked for IBM I took one of their Basic Electronics Courses back in the 70s and never really put it to good use. Forgot a lot that was taught in that course after 40 Years. It was enough to make me dangerous!

I thank you for the compliment!

It is a very smart looking project. You've got skills and taste.

I have considered these over time...good to hear the kit doesn't leave gaps or questions...though yes, it does require experience. Looking over their website, I was thinking about the 5F4 Super model...which ones did you consider before choosing the 5E3?

Sound clips? I'd love to hear your demo, as the website really doesn't really do enough to show the full range...

Cheers.

One of the reasons for choosing a 5e3 was I already had the RCA 6v6 tubes and wanted to put them to good use. Got them from a Lowery Organ I bought to harvest the innards and wood in the cabinet. It didn't work and I paid $40 for it and more than got my money out of it. Doesn't seem like much of a reason but the more I looked into 5e3s I liked what I was hearing and seeing. Also scored a few nice preamp tubes from that organ. I have spent more than that for single ANOS on eBay.

I wanted to build something as reason 2. I had to prove to myself I could do it. Now I know a little more and I can plan a higher level amp build. I did look at the Pro but already have three 6l6 based amps.

Reason 3 was to have a different amp with 6v6 tubes and I wasn't wanting a single output tube amp.

Cathode Bias was reason 4 because I wanted to experience an amp like that.

I am considering something like a Deluxe Reverb for my next build. Want to stay within reasonable weight range or I would go for a Super Reverb. May consider a Vibroluxe Reverb.
Lastly I want to pass on my experience with my family who are interested. I have grand kids into music now. My one son is interested in building now even though he doesn't play guitar or other musical instruments. He gave me a helping hand when I needed an extra hand now and then and kept a check on progress. He was there when I tested and when I had it all together in the cabinet fired up and played.

My guitar playing skills aren't the best and my range in music is Country, Country Rock and Gospel. I have been known to record at times so a demo may appear. I have CuBase and M-Audio Fast Track Pro, good mics and powered monitors. I may even get my brother to do a demo while I run the panel, He is a much better guitarist. Finger Picker!

" Cathode Bias was reason 4 because I wanted to experience an amp like that. "

Cathode biased amps usually run in a "hot" Class AB1 or Class "A" mode. Less watts of audio output, but a creamier onset of OD --- which is 6V6GT's forte. Classic tweed tone. Most of these amp really sound good with alnico magnet speakers.

Excellent build! Good job. :D  :D

Thank You!
The bug has bitten, next build is already picked and maneuvering to make room and get back a little cash for it. Deluxe Reverb is my next build. Selling a couple Peavey amps that were fine when I needed them. (this is not an ad to sell) I want to end up with no more amps than I had and this will be an upgrade. Those amps do not even approach the quality of the 5e3 that I just completed and so simple. Who knew?

I just upgraded my OT to a Bandmaster OT and put 6L6WXT+ in and mine is 32.967W. Didn't do anything else to standard 5E3 circuit and still cathode bias. Same filter caps 16uf. I almost left it as is because it was really sounding good with the 6V6 in it. Well I am glad I did it, sounds great and less feedback with my mic plugged in which is really a plus. The OT was a Magnetic Components 40-18088 $50 + .

Checking in to see my last post to make sure I am up to date. Still loving the 5E3. Changed the first two filter caps to 30 uf and 20 uf. I have RCA 6L6GC black plate in for power tubes. I might change a few coupling caps to experiment. I have a Holy Grail Reverb and a Boss DD7 Delay plugged before the guitar and it sounds great. Watts are still at 32W with the RCAs per Weber Bias link. Did all the measurements and plugged them in to the program. Saves a lot of math!

Talked to bluesky636 the other day and he still hasn't done his build. I guess he has been busy and is waiting to have some time for it. I would like to see him return! I think he had already ordered his kit before he left.

I have been trying to spend a bit more time playing to get my timing and dexterity back instead of all the tinkering with guitars and amps. Some progress  , finding I have to relearn the lyrics to the songs I used to know. Get part way through them and forget a verse.

Anyway the amp sure sounds nice and is inspiring me to play more. That's a good thing! Also it is very light and all I need is the 5E3 if I go out somewhere. I have been at my daughter's house for a week now and set up in the garage with my mic and micstand and 5E3. I go out there and play a couple times a day. Just one amp does it all, left my acoustic Crate that my mic usually goes thru at home.

I am still liking my 5e3 and have settled in with GE 6V6GTAs. The speaker is sounding nice too. Broke in for sure by now. I am sticking with the Jensen that came with the kit.

That's great Cap! Neither mine nor Snowy's builds are traditional builds. It's the Tube Depot and it built on a PCB. The circuit's there. Still a great amp. Your's looks great. Mine's running a GZ34, 6V6 and 12ax7's from JJ. I've been gigging with it for over a year and so far so good. I have a Weber 12a125a Alnico in it. I did just do a Marshall 1974 18 watt clone hat was a traditional build. I had to drill and stake the turret board. Sounds great. There's nothing more satisfying than building your own amp. Congrats again.

Thank You! Yes it is very gratifying to build your own amp. I don't regret doing the build. It came out much better than I ever expected. The 5E3 gets most of my playing now and my Supersonic sits. Nothing wrong with the SS 60W either but that 5E3 is sweet!
I am thinking of doing a DR next or a Marshall Plexi with a turret board.

Cap, that DR is way over my head. That Marshall 18 watt clone I made is seriously sweet. Then tremolo is beautiful sounding. I got to A/B the amp at a friends gig. He owns the Marshall 1974x reissue and he couldn't believe the sound that was coming out of that amp at a third of the cost. He actually found it a little more responsive than his Marshall and liked it a little better. It sounded a little different but not much. I did a switchable Tube/Solid State mod to it that too it over the top and gave it slightly more wattage, a little more headroom and tightened it up slightly. Just that little push over the cliff.

Doug Hoffman has one that he just built and is going to load to his site. I think that is the one I am going to do. Notice I didn't say try! It will be a head.
