Hi all again been a while.

So my nearby shop has picked up an interesting piece, a late 60's early 70's VR.

However, no one there seems to know the year and aside from that a speaker is dead. I wasn't able to snap pics.

My question is since this amp probably has the AB568 or AA270 how different would this vary from my pro reverb with the AA1069 circuit. I thinking it boils more down to the 2x10 config vs the 2x12.

I of course would not mind having both. :D

Also, was the VR 35 watts in the late 60's or by this time was it 40?

Thanks all,

Thanks, for the link, but I already have the site bookmarked. :D

I was just hoping to hear some more details than this site covers on it.

remstar,

The Pro Reverb has a stouter power supply arrangement than the Vibrolux Reverb. Some tonal difference reflect these setups.

The original AA964 Vibrolux Reverb was a 35-watt platform. When the circuit was revised in 1968 to become the AB568 the output was uprated to 40 watts, due primarily to a different rectifier in the power supply (GZ34 to 5U4GB) and slightly higher B+ values. Many of the other tube-rectified amps were similarly infused with additional power during this era as their rectifiers were switched (Super Reverb, Bandmaster Reverb, Pro Reverb).

Sonically, the Vibrolux Reverb and Pro Reverb are quite similar though the latter's larger drivers provide a more robust bottom end. OTOH, the VR with its smallish output tranny and power supply based on the Deluxe Reverb will saturate and compress more quickly than the PR.

remstar, I have a 1971 silverface VLR. It has two CTS alnico 10-inch speakers. The tone of my VLR is more like an oversized Deluxe Reverb. Earlier OD and bit more harmonic overtones than, say my 1969 Super Reverb driving two 10-inch speakers, as a comparison. I haven't tried the Pro Reverb in years, so can't exactly remember the comparison. But, I believe the PR was cleaner to higher volume than the VLR.

I really like the VLR, as in-between the DR and bigger two 6L6GC Fender amps. FWIW.

BTW.. from your nom-de-plume, you like REM? Are you looking for that jingle-jangle tone of early-to-mid REM? A Rik through a Pro Reverb maybe a nice pair to try out.

Good luck on your hunt! :D
