All -

I have my Princeton Reverb - 77 pull boost, so I added a Deluxe Reverb output transformer and cleaned up the wiring. Sounds great at low volumes with a Jensen reissue speaker, but above 4 that speaker just farts and turns to mush. Normally for porch playing this isn't an issue, but the amp sounds great and is my only combo currently for practice, so would like to get it so that I could use more of the volume knob (and keep up with our drummer).

Cab is particle board with glued in/dadoed baffle, so adding a 12 isn't practical (I also have a matching closed 1x12 cab. Looking for a better 10" speaker that will give me sweet clean, but further on up the road crunch without farting out. So far on my list:

Weber AlNiCo 10A125 - have 2 of these in my Tremolux and I do like.
Warehouse Speakers G10C/S

Upper end
Kendrick Blackframe 10
Warehouse Speakers G10A

Any other thoughts? Looking to keep the Princeton chime which is why I'm not looking at more British-voiced speakers.

thanks!

Eminence's Ragin' Cajun and Copperhead might both be worthy alternatives as well. Your current list of candidates contains some choice possibilities.

Go with the Kendrick! Great speakers, sturdy but still have a nice old Jensen vibe to em.

Thanks Arjay. If I go vintage, how would an old C10N or Q compare?

Either of those would be my first choice -- I didn't mention them because so few people want to deal with the aggravation of having an older speaker reconed. Personally, I prefer a vintage driver over anything new but that's just me (and a few other purists here).

Thanks. Given I'm close enough to drive to Orange County Speaker for a recone, it's a consideration.

Then by all means, go for the vintage Jensen. The "N" is a bit of overkill but the "Q" is perfect for a 15-watt amp that may be dimed on a regular basis. I'd disregard an "R" for this application but for something in the 25-30 watt range that required a pair, the C10R would be ideal.

My '66 PR has the original Jensen C10NS (C10P), that's exactly what you'd get with this speaker.

For me nothing beats the sweet cleans from an original Jensen! But they're not the most efficient speakers out there. Mine was reconed.

I've also tried a WGS G10C in there, more efficient and tighter bass, clean almost as sweet as the Jensen, once broken in, but you're not gonna get any speaker break-up, even dimed.

Agree with Arjay, the N is probably overkill for a PR, and since the NS or P is almost impossible to find I'd go with the Q. I had a C12Q in my DR a while back and it was one sweet speaker with great break-up.

I ended up going with the Kendrick Blackframe 10, and it arrived on the 3rd. Had it swapped in on Saturday, and OMG this speaker sounds great! Clean and full at lower volumes, and then sweet crunch without farting out at 6 and up. Definitely a massive improvement over the Italian Jensen and glad I had some downtime to do the swap.

Arjay - yes they do. Was even more surprised that ordered it Monday evening, and it showed up Thursday afternoon USPS. Nice way to start the long weekend!

Another convert...Kendricks are great speakers, just a bit expensive but worth every penny.

When I replaced the speaker in my '64 Princeton I went with a CTS Alnico because someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse!

Enjoy the breakin!

From your lips to God's ear!

Fifty-five parachute drops (not including my school jumps at Ft. Benning) and my gelatin knees are ready for the proverbial "pasture" now.
