The Russian tubes seem to be the toughest, but not always the sweetest sounding ones IMHO and generally speaking. Sometimes you really just have to experiment and find the tubes that fit the sound you are looking for from your particular guitar/amp set up.

If you really want to get to know your way around some pre-amp tubes, read the post that Cedar Blues started called 12AX7/7025 a few posts down from this one it. He appears to have tried many different types (to include NOS) from different countries and I must say the tone he gets from his selections of tubes is amazing.

FWIW

I dunno about amazing... problem is I'm never satisfied and I'm always trying different things to "improve" my tone, sometimes I just forget to play!

For new production, and based on the two 12AX7 I've tried, I'd have to pick the Chinese Psvane as the winner. But it's still too early to tell how they'd hold up long term. I'm not a JJ fan, but they do seem to last...

For 12AT7 just go with Mullard CV4024, plenty of those around and still reasonably priced. Excellent tube and so far seem to last forever.

Cedar,

Where did you finally rank the Gold Lion ECC83/B759?

Personally, for the reverb driver 12AT7, I like the Sylvania/Philips mil spec triple mica 12AT7WA or WC. Very tough tube. Quiet, long lasting.

Thanks!

I'm still a fan, but I'm picking the Chinese as the overall winner, not just based on tone. The GL has more gain, and is a quiet tube. But at very loud volumes I didn't like what it did. Keeping the volume around 6-7 or lower it's great! I like to play clean, so I'm sure someone else who uses pedals might not like the extra gain. I like the cleans better on the Psvane.

Both were quiet tubes and no microphonics, which is great for new tubes.

Great, now I have to start this process again with 12AT7 :(
