Now if we put Jupiter red's, Mallory 150's and Sozo blue's, we would truly have an American amplifier!!!!

It can still be done and I applaud anyone who aspires to do it.

Re: sozo

I see on the website they are rated for 400v, are they like the jupiter a where they are actually capable of handling higher voltages?

Thanks in advance

AFAIK, Jupiter Red caps are the only "de-rated" caps, for the purpose of shooting for a more authentic look. My bet, Sozo are prolly prolly ok to 600VDC, as they are replicas of the OEM Blue MOLDED caps. Though, the OEM Blue MOLDED caps, which Fender used, were usually spec'ed to 600VDC. Go figure...

For a more warm, vintage tone --- PIO caps maybe nice in selected positions. Like the PI and input stages. K40Y-9 are very nice, well made caps. FWIW.

I heard a lot about pio caps and how great they sound. So I put one in my LP a few years back and never looked back. Smoothed out the tone and made the tone control, pots more useable. I've also heard that when these types of caps go out, they go out with a vengeance. That has kept me from trying them in an amp circuit. Is this true, or can they be trusted?

The metal clad Russian mil spec caps seem to be pretty reliable. I try to use 600VDC rated caps or better, the 1KV rated ones.

I heard back from Sozo and they said 800v's, but only for a short time. They should have no problem with 600v's, in my humble opinion.

Voltages higher than 600 VDC are seldom seen in a tweed-based amp platform -- you should be good to go, upnorth.

After playing this 5F11 for awhile it's starting to sound pretty good. It definitely has a bit of mid hump, not sure if the blue Sozo's are responsible. The 5E3 I just worked on and another build I did didn't have this much mid. I've noticed a slight difference when swapping rectifiers and power tubes. EH 6V6's seem to enhance the mids a little, maybe that's why some like them in the DRRI's. I've ordered a EQ pedal in hope of being able to tame the mids a bit so I can use an OD pedal at lower volumes.

A few of us gray hairs started a jam on Thursday nights and it works great for the bluesy - 60's rock we're playing. We sound terrible. Nothing works the same anymore. Oh well, It'll come together and we're having fun. Haven't played with this drummer for almost 40 yrs., I think,......... we were pretty gassed back then.

Last night I used the Jupiter 10SC in it. Today I swapped baffles and am using a '66 C12NA. I thought about maybe increasing the treble and bass caps. I realize that tweeds are mid heavy, (maybe everything else is just overly mid scooped) but this seems just a touch too much, especially with humbuckers - Classic 57's in my go to. Speaker suggestions?

The C12NA is a pretty bright speaker (which is why I asked about it).

It sounds like some tinkering with the cap values in the amp's tone stack might be in order.

Thanks Arjay. I do have some .0068uf, etc. (.0047uf in there now) but all I have on hand for Silver Mica's is 500pf and less.

Time to put an order together for AES or Mouser.

Arjay, awhile ago you suggested a Weber 12A150 for this 5F11 and my finger has been hovering over the "add to cart". I think it's an excellent choice. 25watt - light dope maybe? I see there's a used 50w one on eBay but I'm thinking the 25w is a better match. What about the 12A150T? Anyone tried one of these. I see they have more bottom end according to Weber's site, maybe not a good choice for a tweed. This amp is really starting to open up, mids are leveling out nicely but it definitely thrives with a 12" and a 5E3 output tranny. Sozo is right about break-in. It takes some hours before they start to sound better. My wife has logged some colorful metaphors attesting to that.

Thanks for any input.

I see no reason why the 50-watt Weber wouldn't be an acceptable match to the amp. And being "used", the break-in period has already began. If the price is right and the seller has a good track record, pull the trigger.

" 25watt - light dope maybe. "

50 watt rated one work fine. I like Webers with no doping. They response better to fine articulations. Just my 2¢ worth...
