I added adjustable fixed and it works good. I hear no "lack of depth", unless I have sh#t in my ears. I started by putting a 51K on the pot and that ended up being enough. I can get 21 mA's toward the lower with the EH's and 21 mA's toward the upper with the RCA's. Quite a spread on those 2 sets of tubes.

These Sozo's sound good in this amp so far. It's now time to build a mahogany foot switch!

Speaking of caps, I wonder if you fine gents would lend me your opinion(s) on a few types of caps for a discussion I am in with a friend about an amp build. If you were building an amp today and you had your choice (money no object) between Sprague orange drops, Mallory 150s or Jupiters, which would you go with and why?

All of the mentioned caps will work fine. Depends on the tone you wish. I like the Jupiter Yellow caps, to get close to the original Blue Molded tone. Upnorth, on this thread, is building a DIY using Blue Sozo caps. Be interesting to hear his opinion of these caps.

Russian mil spec PIO (K40Y-9) and Teflon caps (FT-3) are also quite nice in these vintage amps.

Smooth!

How about the speaker -- you gonna switch it out for an alnico?

Ya, I'm thinking about that. Many options. I'm building an extra 12" baffle today. YouTube reviews are okay at best, you just can't beat throwing one in the box for yourself. The Weber's I've tried do seem to be pretty good for the price. I've used Signatures and 12A125A's but that's it.

The Weber's, once broken in, do a pretty fair approximation of a vintage Jensen.

Re: sozo

I see on the website they are rated for 400v, are they like the jupiter a where they are actually capable of handling higher voltages?

Thanks in advance

That's a good question. I didn't inquire about the max voltage but yes, some new coupling type caps are labeled lower (at 400v's) than what they really are for "vintage purposes". I.E., blue molded caps from Fender blackface amps. Maybe someone else on the forum will fill in the blanks.

I'll do my best to contact them on Monday, but that can also be a job.

Depends on tone wished .... could you please elaborate? The selection of cap brands will affect tone? I thought it was mostly about quality. I (wrongly, I guess) assumed tone had to do with the values of the caps.

The caps that you referenced are used for coupling and tone stack (in the signal path), so each brand/type will affect the tone/response of the amp in a different way. The power supply, bias and bypass electrolytic caps (not in the signal path) do not affect tone to any appreciable degree between brands, unless you change the F value, so in the case of these caps, yes only the quality is a factor.

Nope. Coupling caps are in the signal path. Therefore, they have a direct effect on the tone. What are looking for? Vintage brown tone (ala: tweed)? Vintage blackface? Silverface? Clean mids-highs? Tight bass? Warm mids? Smooth bass? Each amp responses slightly differently to the same caps. A lot of variables.

Maybe, best way to start is: what amp you have? What tone/music you seeking?

I would start with the Jupiters -- to my ears they're very close to the old yellow Astron's as used prolifically in the tweeds and brownfaces.

I have to say, I was concerned how these blue Sozo's were going to sound in this 5F11 circuit. I really shouldn't give too much of a review until I put a few hours on them but............, it's hard to quit playing this amp right now. Another thing for me to fret about. Jupiter's or Sozo's.

Now if we put Jupiter red's, Mallory 150's and Sozo blue's, we would truly have an American amplifier!!!!
