Just wondering if there would be an advantage/disadvantage by using 22uf/500v filter caps in a 5F11 build rather than the 16uf/475v the schematic shows. I know it affects the sag some, and have read smaller value caps were just cheaper and readily available "back then", compared to the higher. I'm going with fixed bias on this amp and don't want to lose all the sag.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks. I have some 22uf/500 F&T's. I'm also trying some Sozo blue molded caps in this amp.

I think you'll find the bass response a bit less flabby with higher-value electrolytics in the filter array. "Sag" should not be affected to any appreciable degree.

And a +1 to those Sozo tone caps -- they'll closely mimic the Blue Molded's as used in the later brownface and blackface amps. I'm told that the yellow Jupiter's are a good substitute for the old mustard-colored Astron's (have not yet used them personally).

Thanks Arjay. I've used the Jupiter reds with good results and have some yellows on hand, but in the wrong values. Those were my first thought, but haven't ever tried the Sozo blue molded.

It was my Fender amp tech buddy who first alerted me to the Sozo's and the Jupiter's some years back and after he made his case with a '64 Super Reverb he'd restored using those caps, I quickly became a disciple. The amp in question had been totally gutted by a previous owner who'd foolishly become infatuated with "Dumble-ism" then given up after removing and discarding all the parts that made a Super Reverb a Super Reverb. The restoration was quite a chore but if my friend hadn't revealed the sordid tale I'd have never suspected that the amp had ever been tampered with -- it sounded that authentic.

Stratele & upnorth, I've never used the Sozo cap, either. But from experience, I can say that the Jupiter Yellow caps sound consistently close to the original Blue MOLDED. Used in a variety of Fender amps. 6V6GT Champ's, Princeton's, and Deluxe's. To 6L6GC SR, Tremolux, and Bassman. FWIW.

I've also used the F&T 22mfd/500VDC in place of the OEM 16mfd/450VDC cap. Recheck your plate voltages, after replacement. Be sure to use a good 12AT7 (I like 12AT7WA or E81CC) in the PI and reverb driver positions. As the small signal tubes will be seeing higher plate voltages, too. The 12AT7 seems a bit more susceptible to becoming noisy. Prolly, because the PI is the first tube to get voltage off the power rail, just past the choke. And the reverb driver 12AT7 runs both plates tied together, with the most current flowing through the cathode.

Can't you just picture (with trauma and in "slow motion" of course) the handful of blue molded caps falling into the garbage can. It's great that we have options like Jupiter and Sozo. Some will say there's no difference in caps of equal value and composition. I must beg to differ.

I have about thirty of them in my spares box. When the day arrives when I have to replace a beloved Blue Molded tone cap I'll be ready......

BTW Steve, I bought three 5-packs (15 total) of those NOS Sprague 25/50 bias-supply electrolytics. They oughta last me long enough until I start my dirt nap.

Arjay, those aluminum clad Sprague caps are good ones. The last of the exclusive US made ones. I believe that their new black plastic covered ATOMS are US made.

I got a set of 3 sleeves, too. Thanks, for the heads-up.

Anytime!

Whenever I see bargains to be had on stuff I know we live and breathe for, I pass the links along. Tubes, caps, sockets, NOS carbon-comps, the usual. Anything to keep these old Fender's in the game.

Well, the Vibrolux is coming along nicely. Since I had a real '59 5E3 cabinet here I took the liberty of taking some measurements. The dimensions I found online a while back for a 5E3 build I did were off, so I'm glad I measured prior to building this one. Unless Leo made every narrow panel Deluxe different, these have to be right. I just about have it ready for tweed and the chassis guts are coming along. It's nice to have a small sawmill around that saws, dries and planes real white pine. (That black mark on the inside in the first picture is from my vacuum)

Very nice job! Nice to have the right tools, esp with woodworking. Be interesting, re: your thoughts on those Zoso caps. I suppose you should test drive "Black Dog," as the first song.
