Just how "decent" was that reaming?

If you only paid $375 for the amp you can afford a couple of bills for a proper servicing. OTOH if you gave $550 for it, yeah......definite sodomy.

:(

Well, I paid $400 for it. A more reputable tech in town says he can get right to it, so I'm going to take it by later today and see what rabbits he can pull out.

Not bad. For a bill, mebbe $125, he should be able to straighten things out. That should keep you below the threshold of economic pain. Those Concert Amps are pretty versatile rigs.

The biggest issue for me is near-absolute reliability, ha. Maybe I shoulda got a Solid State number!

I play with a pickup band, who through the leader's business, have landed a pretty great gig later this Summer opening for an '80s rock icon at a big corporate todo. That said, I gotta have my stuff in top shape...so off to the mender she goes! If the estimate is too high, I might have to eat a loss and release her back into the wild, but I have high hopes. Will report back this afternoon.

For a gig that important, I'd bring two amps.

Just in case......

Yep, I'm already looking into renting a second rig! Now if I could just rent some guitar chops, I'd be all set....

The good news is that new tech I've taken it to spotted the tubes as a probable culprit. I didn't realize that they appeared to be original to the amp (SHEESH).
He agreed that it's a super cool amp and definitely advised trying to fix it rather than re-selling it at a loss. Will update with the final verdict later....

Smooth. Get some pics up if you get a chance.

Also, here's an MP3 of the noise description: http://tinyurl.com/ltmxhw9

Thanks, guys!

Those are the original Mallory main filter caps (made between 32nd week of 1981 and 34th week of 1982). All need to be replaced. Use as near equivalent F&T caps, as possible. Keep voltage rating of each cap at, or above OEM value.

Good luck!

+1

Definite signs of honest use and abuse -- well past their useful service life.

Thanks guys. I'll get my amp back Monday. Assuming the tube job has tamed the hum for now, I'll have to save up a bit more mad money before I can send her back for a set o' new caps. What should I expect to pay to get a set of F&Ts put on there?

I just re-capped a '66 Vibrolux Reverb with F&T's. The complete set (filter, bias, bypass -- 13 electrolytics total) ran about fifty-eight bucks from an Ebay vendor, with free S&H. The price for your Concert shouldn't be much more than that.

OK, she's back and the hum is pretty much gone. I'll have to save up for a cap job, but I posted a pic of it and my Hi-Flyer in the Flikr album above.
I'm thinking that stock speaker is a little cheap sounding. What go you think about replacing it with a Eminence Red Coat The Governor?

A Governor might work well in your amp but I'm thinking that the Texas Heat would be a better choice. Either one will likely be a significant improvement over the OEM driver though.

If money is tight might I suggest Wharehouse speakers. Good quality speakers. A friend of mine just replaced the 12 in his Deluxe Reverb with one of their G12C, 75 watts. Sounds close to a Jensen C12N if you like a vintage vibe to your Concert. He swears by these and I was impressed with the tones he got with it, it had a nice crisp top end.
