Russian made, supposed to be better against microphony, than their long plate Mullard RI 12AX7.

Yeah I saw those recently, thought about trying them, since I happen to be a fan of the long plate version... but you pointed me towards the Gold Lion and Psvane, so I didn't bother :)

Cedar, I didn't even know about this short-plate version, until last week. I agree, for tone, it's very hard to beat a good long plate. It's what made the early iterations of the Blackburn Mullard ECC83 so famous. And only those first three iterations. The ones with the acid etched I61, I62, I63 Philips/Valvo/Mullard codes.

There's is one other tube I didn't mention. But, is very good. The TESLA E83CC. Factory Code 32 (only this one). Frame-grid plates. As good a tone as any 12AX7. Even the Holy TFN ECC803S.

They can be yellow or white labeled. TESLA not JJ. Gold or steel pin. Press the "watch Button" for these. :D

It's just "frame-grid" (nothing to do with the Plates), and means just that. Each triode has a frame that the grid wraps around, the two grid posts have "bars" that connect the posts at the top and bottom, rather than just two posts as on most other tubes.

Mike,

Sorry, you are correct. I mistaken the shape of the anode peculiar to many 9-pin mini frame-grid tubes with the structure. The frame is supporting the grid. And not the anode.

Frame grids are one of the things that make the Tesla E83CC and TFK ECC803S so special. I would like some new production tubes with frame grids, but I don't believe that anyone does that anymore......do they?

Mike,

AFAIL, the modern JJ ECC83S & all 6DJ8/6922/ECC88 are frame-grid design.

I believe those two sources you quote are misinformed.
I don't remember where right now......but I've led to believe no one makes a frame grid tube any longer.
Too expensive to duplicate those manufacturing techniques.
The JJ ecc83 is a tube with "appearance" to the frame grid tubes of the past.

Allow me to add that usually, I'm under impression that a well made new production tube is as good as any cork sniffing vintage type.
But then I again prove myself wrong when I throw a strong vintage tube in.
Best examples lately were the 30 Raytheon long black plate ax7's.....and some RCA 1961 med. gray plate ax7's
I got from organ pulls.
The Raytheon's were strong and very clear, and the RCA's really added balls to my drri.
Probably not a secret that most organ pulls result in strong, very low mileage tubes.

The Electro-Harmonix 6922/ECC88/6DJ8 is a true frame-grid tube. Reflector still makes this tube for military, as well as commercial use.
