As 95% of the nation’s gear addicts were happily sawing logs in lumberjack city last night, I was hard at work as always, scoring the proverbial deal of the day on Ebay......

Though this was listed as a 1975 model, it’s actually a ‘66. The green-inked “OA” on the tube chart is the tip-off. When they started marking them at the beginning of the 1966 model year, somebody neglected to roll the date-stamper’s year letter forward to read “PA”. And green ink was used exclusively to mark these bogus-and-erroneous charts. But the initial revelation came when I was examining the front panel. I mean, who in their right mind puts a complete set of blackface-era snowman knobs on a supposed 1975 amp? Further investigation revealed that all the trannies dated to late ‘65 (most with pre-CBS FEIC P/N’s) and the build date ink-stamped on the chassis translated to the 3rd week of January 1966. Dittos with those gorgeous Fender-marked Jensen C10NS’s – a original matching pair dated to the 50th week of ‘65. The innards are untouched with all of the beloved Blue Molded tone caps in place and the tubes are all vintage bottles from Mullard, RCA, and GE. A previous owner had attempted to “update” the amp by re-grilling it (badly I might add) and swapping the BF front panel for a mid-70’s silverface piece. The price was right and I think I did pretty well (about a grand below market value). I’ve already ordered a repro BF front panel – grill cloth to follow.

Arjay,

Great deal! Nice speakers, too. Tell me what you think of the tone versus your DR.

Enjoy!

Arjay,

Very nice score! It will be very interesting to see your progress as you bring this amp back to showroom condition.

Your new Strat should sound very nice through those Jensens.

My thoughts precisely.

A new guitar always rates a new amp.

Well I've been reconnoitering for a Vibrolux Reverb for quite awhile. I finally gave up on FMIC's allegedly-forthcoming VM silverface which may or may not materialize. And since they seem loath to get off the dime I decided a proactive stance would serve me in better stead. And I know I won't be ending up with some aggravating "hangar queen" that'll have to be returned under warranty because of shoddy design, engineering, or execution.

Nobody disses an original blackface Fender.

Once again, Arjay proves "Knowledge is Power" and makes a stupendous find where literally thousands of people couldn't see the forest through the trees :!: :!: :!:

Congrats.

Now all that is left for your Blackface/Silverface collection is a Super Reverb!
