Last week my early 70's twin failed in the middle of a gig and blew a new 6L6-pop, bang, hum. :x Upon inspection, the filter caps were dried out and leaking badly. I replaced them and all is good, luckily. They were not the original caps, so I thought I was safe. They were about 15 years old. I recommend checking them ever 10 years and replace if needed. Don't let it happen to you. Electrolytics dry out quickly. Cheers

Good advice! This is whether the amp is played a lot or sits in the closet. It doesn't seem to matter. The drying out process occurs in either situation.

On the other hand, amps should be fired up once every 6-12 months, to keep the main filter caps formed. If the amp has been sitting for several years, the caps should be re-formed.

Testimony from another confirmed believer.

Don't neglect the electrolytic in the bias-supply circuit -- they age just as quickly as the caps under the doghouse.

Rawk on!
