My old amp tech Roy Blankenship always said most of the time returning old amps to stock solved the problem. If I don't like the way a stock amp sounds, I won't buy it. How many times have you seen an old silverface amp for sale that has been recently "blackfaced".

OK so I'm about ready to pull the trigger on new power tubes for the Bassman.

I think I'm going with the Tung-sol 6L6GC-STR (thanks for the recommendation BMW)

Only thing I'm questioning now is if you have any experience with the ratings with the Tung-Sol's, i.e Hard, Soft, Medium?

I read all that I could pertaining to what they're SUPPOSED to do but I'm just in search of any first hand knowledge.

I tend to play at a lower volume and don't see myself gigging out where I would need to crank the volume too much. But we all love the saturation and break up...so I'm leaning toward the "soft".

Thanks again.

As far as I know, the Tungsol 6L6GC-STR do not come with the "soft, medium, hard" Groove Tube ratings. Bias them to 60-70% of the max 35 watts per tube, in your Bassman. Try to buy them from a seller that matches the pair under amp-like voltages and currents.

Good luck! Tell us how you like them. :)

That's a fair price though like Steve, I've never seen T-S STR's with a "rating". I have a quartet of these in a late silverface Bassman 135. Thus far, they've proven to be good-sounding and durable.

Don't buy these. IMHO "soft" means these tube pass lower mA than other new tubes. Try to get a pair with the highest matched mA passed. They will last the longest. I like Jim McShane. He matches and burns in all new output tubes. He will be out of his store until Friday May 9th.

" 6L6GC-STR Tung-Sol - this is a really nice tube! It is the first new black plate tube made in a long time, and it has tone that I think equals some NOS! Just $21.50 ea., $43.50/pair, $87.50/quad "

See? That's the kind of info this board is invaluable for.

Thank you. I'll throw him an email.

If you're ordering from Jim, you might think about having him select a balanced 12AT7 for your phase inverter (V4) position. He's pretty conscientious about his measuring procedures.

...playing the Bandmaster last week and the oscillating noise that I originally started this thread about was there (like it has been).

Song finished, I picked up my beer and took a long swig, put it down on top of the cabinet and holy crap!! It stopped!!

Cold solder joint maybe?

Or poor contact between the tubes and sockets.

If all is ok, maybe let sleeping dogs lie, for now.

:D

That, or perhaps a carbon-comp resistor tied to a cathode-bypass sub-circuit that has fractured due to age and/or thermal exposure. If the symptom manifests in both channels start your investigation in the phase-inverter stage.
