I am selling a pristine 1966 Fender Twin Reverb that had JBL G125s added (I'm guessing in the mid 80s) and I wanted to ask a few questions to get a sense of what it's worth. I am seeing completely original 1966 blackface amps being sold for $2000 and up on ebay. Aside from the speakers, the only other mods made to this amp were replacing the MDF baffle with 1/2" birch plywood and having the electronics serviced at Charrette Electronics in Brooklyn, NY:

Quote:
Replaced 6L6 tubes. Replaced 1000 ohm screen resistors with 470 ohm resistors and replace outputs with 6L6. Set amp for proper bias current. Clean all controlls and tighten all hardware. When testing amp reverb went into oscillation ..... replaced 12AX7 reverb return / chan mixer tube. Also replace 2 prong power cord with 3 prong version.

So my question is does the JBL upgrade lower the value significantly? I understand these speakers were about $275 apiece when they were new and that the tone with JBLs is warmer and rounder than the stock speakers, is that accurate? Personally I love the way the amp sounds but I haven't played a stock BFTR to compare.

Also wondering about this being a "post-CBS" amp, apparently the pre-CBS amps are much more valuable, but everything I've seen indicates they were made with the same parts and the same design, at least in early '66 (This one has "PB" on the tube chart, so Feb 1966). Is this just dogma or is there something to the distinction?

Do you have the original speakers at all??
If yes, I'd put them back in and sell as close to the original condition as possible.
I doubt they go over $2000 .. yes, peps are asking but not getting the $$

Good luck with the sale. :D

Thanks NT, I don't have the original speakers. I was actually thinking of buying a pair of original speakers and swapping them out, selling the JBLs separately, but I figure the buyer could do that if they don't love the sound of the JBLs.

I did see a couple 1966 BFTRs go for over $2000 on eBay recently. Both were in amazing condition and almost completely original though, so I won't be surprised if mine goes for less :(

Another option is to get the originals (preferably Jensens), sell the amp with Jensens and sell the JBL's separately.

Either way you'll be fine if the amp is in good condition and the price is right. :D

JBL's G125 was the company's response to the Celestion craze of the early '80s. It never became as popular among players as with the earlier D- and K-series speakers and it cost far less than either of them because it featured none of the precision engineering and disciplined design that made the earlier speakers legendary.

Your 1966 Fender Twin Reverb likely left Fullerton with either the Oxford 12T6 or the Jensen C12N as original equipment. The Oxfords were no great shakes but there was a special magic in those Chicago-built Jensens. The only other speaker that Fender ever installed in these amps was the gray-basket JBL D120F and it was an extra-cost option.
