Frustrated today. I have tried the JJs, the new Tung-Sols, Telefunkin and even a few Sovtek 12AX7s , and so far I haven't found one that stood up AND sounded great. Just recently went through 3 Tung-Sols in one day (one heated up and shattered, two were noisy and micro-phonic) so I slipped in one of my NOS GE's into my Concert II and its sounds like the amp did when I bought it.

My stash of NOS GE and RCA's is down to 6 and want to keep those for my Bassman and Super Reverb. This got me thinking, about this post, so I ordered a couple Gold Lions with the gold pins and going to give them a try and see how they sound and hold up. Will let everyone know if I experience the same as Cedar Blues and the rest with em.

:x

Shimmy, how to you like the TAD compared to other modern 12AX7 tubes?

Thanks!

It was my favorite for the DRRI V1 position, very lush, musical sound, no noise at all.

With my vintage Fenders, I don't like to use 12ax7s for the simple fact I feel it throws the headroom off.

I've grown accustomed to a familiar amount of headroom with my amps running with 7025s. (mainly Nos RCA's) and think they have a smoother less of a sharp top end than a typical 12ax7 (my RCA's 12ax7s included)

With Nos tubes getting expensive (and rare) I've started to try modern tubes. So far I've had decent results with JJs 5751s. I want to try Tungs sols 5751.. I like the newer large plate Mullard 12ax7, just wish it had the output of a 7025.

Ever try the 12AY7/6072, in place of the OEM 12AX7. Esp in input stages of the amp?

Funny that Shimmy should posted about the TAD 7025WA's, when I went to order the Gold Lions, I grabbed a pair of these as well, since I have had very good luck with their power tubes.

All I can say is both are quiet, non micro phonic, and sweet sounding, very similar (to my ears anyways) to the old RCA's. The Gold Lions are a bit warmer sounding but not by much. To say I am happy with them is an under statement. Now only time will tell if they stay that way and provide their quiet sweetness for more than 6 months, if so I will remain sold on them.

Nice to see there are new tubes out there that can do the job at least when you compare them dollar wise.

FWIW
