I like that dirt too, as long as it's under control. With a Strat it's the perfect tone with the volume between 6-8, straight in, but at 10 it's a little too much for me. With my 345 it was too much even at 6. The Chinese Psvane did a much better job keeping it together, so did most of the NOS I've tried so far.

Okay, that tells me it's not just my particular guitar and amp. So apparently the Gold Lion is a bit of a lamb when it comes to humbuckers.

Arjay, I think just the opposite. It has a very healthy current output. Which seems to overdrive stages downstream, when it is fed by a high output source (like humbuckers). I have tried the Gold Lion 12AU7, but not their 12AT7. These maybe better in stages which tend to be overdriven by high OP 'buckers.

I agree. But the cumulative effect is a bit too "mushy" for my liking. Too much of the fundamental signal seems to be buried by the overdriven and compressed harmonics. OTOH I think it sounds great with a Strat (I've yet to test the tube with a P90).

Just found the best vintage 1958 Sylvania ax7 I have ever acquired.....very strong output and quite in the 1st gain stage of my drri- (very unusual IMO for a Sylvania).
But here's the caveat.
It was one of the tubes I pulled from a very old Sylvania brand reel to reel tape recorder/player I got at a garage sale for $2.
Thing is....... The tube socket from which I pulled it from was NOT riveted directly to the chassis like the others. In fact, it was a kind of floating socket......which at first made me think it was jury-rigged.
But.......this is what Sylvania must have designed to combat vibrations.
I believe THIS is why the tube isn't yet microphonic, and works so well in my combo amp....for the moment.
Makes me wonder. Wouldn't a semi-isolated (floating) V1 tube socket be generally a good idea for V1 in a combo amp?
I think Sylvania was on to something.

No. I have even seen mil spec sockets which are suspended by rubber mounts or springs. And the tubes can still go microphonic. In signal tubes, esp, the voltage and current setups can lead to microphony as much as physical vibrations. Many go microphonic due to manufacturing issues of the internal structures.

BTW... is that a "square" getter Sylvania 12AX7? Those are some of the best and most desirable 12AX7 type ever made. Congrats!

Thank for the info......and YES, its the square getter.
The tube looks brand new.....no dust with all lettering intact.
I've had many Sylvania ax7's, which can have strong output....but usually microphonic in v1.
Never pass a garage sale.

BTW.....all the tubes were Sylvania (since this was a Sylvania tape recorder), including one 6V6GT and couple 12AU7's (also square getters).
Wish I had a use for my collection of AU7's.

Got to think in about those Sylvania square getter AU7's, and tried one in the pi spot of my drri.
Wow! Just as strong output as my good AT7, but maybe even more punch along with a slight interesting breakup at high volume.
Just discovered a way to save wear on my AT7's.
Let's see how this works over time.

With a mu factor of only 20, you won't be pushing those 6V6GTA's very hard......

The JJ6V6's are sounding very good with them with the volume up a couple notches.
Very surprised this works as good as it does. The Wizard speaker efficiency must be factoring in.

Those Sylvania lp square getters are nice sounding. I have a couple and one got micro so it is now a PI tube.

The Baldwin ( green print) labeled Sylvania 12ax7 is probably better than most current prodution 12ax7 tubes.

I bought six this past winter for 72 bucks. Not quite NOS but they are strong, tested very good(for what thats worth) I bet they will outlast a current 12ax7.

Brent Jessie sells NOS RCA 12ax7 grey plates that he calls butt ugly. Meaning the are not cosmetically correct looking. Or labeled as something else. At 30 bucks each I will take them over anything new. He had some blackplates for 40 bucks but they are gone.

The only current 12ax7s I have are the Russian Tung Sol reissue. They came in a few Victoria amps I have/had. But the Sylvania, and Rca beat the heck out of them. In my amp anyway.

Sylvania built some great tubes back in the day. I have several stashed and installed others in key chassis positions. Their 12AX7 is particularly quiet and can be substituted for a 7025 in many instances, especially in the V4 reverb recovery stage.

That 58 short plate/square getter has really pleased me in my V1 slot. Very strong.
But I could shoot myself for selling 20 plus long shiny black plate Raytheon's recently. Only kept 1 for myself....like a dumb $@!&.
