Hi, I don't get many chances to post on this forum, but wanted to share a recent find... a 1969 SFPR. The odd part (to me) is that it is a blackline! I was under the impression that they were only 68 models. But a tranny code is definitely 69, so be it.

Although this came via Ebay, it was a closet-pull. Other than some dust and a couple scuffs, it is pristine! Original RCA tubes, look brand new.

Took it to my favorite techand he checked everything, changed out the power cord, and proclaimed it glorious!

It does sound fabulous - I changed out the OE speaker for a Weber 10F150. I feel very lucky to have something so awesome!

Nice amp for sure and about a clean one. The original Oxford looks to say 7 or 9 week of 69, so depending on the chassis # on the back, it might just be a very early 69 and one of the last with a black line. Maybe they were just finishing up some left over parts or this face plate was the last in the bin?

Either way, still a fine example of the breed.

Nice score! Clean up the grill cloth and you'll have a showroom looking amp. :)

It wasn't until roughly mid-year of 1969 that the supply of black-line front panels was fully exhausted for most Fender amp models. I've even seen a few oddball examples that dated to 1970.

Very Nice Congrats !! 8)

I've seen quite a few nice SFPRs on the market lately.

I think these amps are sleepers, especially with the way amps are so often mic'd these days. I anticipate their values jumping in the next couple years, esp. the nice ones like yours.

I got my '73 in excellent condition just a couple months ago virtually for a song and am really digging it a lot !!

The orig. Oxford sounded great, but I stumbled on a period correct Jensen for nothing so I added it. I can't really tell which one sounds best, they are both excellent, though in different ways.

cheers!

I purchased a Weber 10F150 speaker for mine, and it just now started to break in.

Sounds wonderful! I use a Timmy to tame the low end a bit. Funny, others amps seem picky about what guitar is played through them; this one loves all 3 of my guitars.

+1

The Princeton and Princeton Reverb are two of Leo's original designs that really perform at their best with an upgraded speaker. Even in their early '60s blackface guise, the anemic Oxford 10J4 never really let the amp "breath" as with a Chicago-made Jensen C10R or C10Q. Premium contemporary speakers like the Webers, the Celestion alnico Gold, and many of the ceramic models from WGS and Eminence will transform the little "student" amp into a real asskicker. I run a CTS alnico from a '67 Super Reverb in mine and though the amp's originality to a purist may be compromised, who cares? Ultimately, these things are tools for producing tone.

What is "black line"?

See the thin vertical lines bordering the "Princeton Reverb-Amp" on the faceplate of your amp?

You don't see them on Jim's later (1973) PR:

That was another person asking (not OP). When I was searching for a PR I was specifically after the Blackline, as they tend to be cheaper than a 67 BFPR.

After a bit of time with the Weber 10F150, I find it's a bit too boomy in the bass department. But I want flub control. What speaker would you recommend?

tjnies,

I like the Weber alnico 10A125 in the PR. Less bass than the ceramic, F (esp the "150" line). Earlier onset of break-up. A bit more mellow tone. Warmer vintage tone, like the OEM CTS alnico tone, which are loaded in my SR and VLR.

Sorry about the "black-line" mix-up. :D

Not a problem!

I'm glad to hear an Alnico is a good choice; I have the 8A125 in my 65 VibroChamp and it's pretty nice.

Anyone try a Celestion G10 Gold in a vintage PR?

I have heard Princeton Reverb's equipped with the Celestion Gold. Sonically, they're a good fit with the amp and sound quite similar to the CTS alnico ten and a vintage Jensen P10P. They're quite pricey though.
