Just to update, I mended the speaker like the video I linked to and it worked great. I used a coffee filter, Aleene's Tacky glue watered down (50/50), and did both sides. I'd show pix but don't have the approval yet. If I get it I'll post. I have a little hum, but think it's a pre-amp tube - will check tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's help on it!

OK... installed the Weber Alnico Sig 6-inch into my Champion 600. Fits fine. Sounds great. That 6SJ7 (5693) pentode is quite a tone-meister. Fun amp.

Looks like it was made for that cabinet!

Arjay,

That amp, as crude as it looks, has crazy-@ss tones. No RI Champion 600 I've heard (modded or not) comes close. Smooth is the word. No mid or high frequency dips or spikes. The 6-inch Webers (ceramic or alnico) signature series are very good speakers. Compliments this amp well. A good tweed Champ may come close. But, that unique front-end 6SJ7-5693 is a killer tube. Very different OD spectrum than any 12AX7. Slower, more controllable.

Maybe, a DIY using this tube might be a nice project... :D

I had a ton of those 6SJ7's (NOS, in original boxes) that I gave away for peanuts. I should've saved a few for you.

Arjay,

In this amp the metal cased 6SJ7 (or better the mil spec 5693) sounds much better than the glass bottles. Dunno why. Been told that most metal can tubes have a degree of microphonic character. Maybe this adds a bit of "life" to this amp. As the mu of this tube is around that of a 12AU7. Not a typical tube used in the input section.
