Boneman, there's a guy near me that does all kinds of speaker reconing, he needs the numbers off it though to see if parts can be gotten for it.

I just got a message back from him and he said his supplier DOES list 6" Fender parts.

Arjay, T2, I hear you. I was repeating what they emailed me about new screw holes. What I would do, if I get a new speaker, is make my own baffle board with some after-market grill cloth, and save the original speaker/baffle board/grill cloth like you're saying. I should have said that originally..

I'm going to first try patching the rips in my cone. I have one big one and two tiny ones. I found some vids on youtube that describe pretty much the same procedure. This one here is really good, especially how he repairs the missing material (starts at ~ 2:05): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW7xuJ2gHOY

Luckily, my rips aren't that bad. I figure I have nothing to lose. If I send it out to re-cone, I won't have an original speaker anymore, because they're going to use paper material with different specifications than in '57 and they are going to replace the voice coil (I guess because it's integral to the cone? I'm going to ask).

If my patchwork doesn't work, I'll see if they can re-cone. If they can't, buy that Sig series speaker that I'm now intrigued about and put my own baffle board in.

But it is odd that he mentioned others rectified the diameter difference by putting in new holes. I didn't pick up on that until you guys mentioned/questioned it. I appreciate it. I'm going to be more cautious. Thanks.

Thanks, Jim. It's a Fender amp with an Oxford speaker. Oxford was a speaker supplier back in the day for them. The speaker's coding is: 6EV-34 465-651.

A wise decision, TBM. Carefully examine your original baffle board after you pull it and take precise measurements of the mounting holes and how they interface with the front of the cabinet. Tint and/or stain the new plywood to match the aged color of the original part. Photos of your original grill cloth may be helpful in your search for some suitable replacement material. Carefully executed, the repro baffle board (with the new Weber installed) should be nearly indistinguishable from the original.

I'll pass it on right now.

You figured it out. :)

Just in case you other guys run into one of these, the shop I contacted said he can re-cone the 6" Oxford. If anyone needs info I'll be glad to send it your way.

Be sure to post an after-action review once the re-coned Oxford is reinstalled and fully broken in.

How long does it take to break in a new speaker? A guitarist I used to play with told me about that but I've never had to break in a bass speaker so I had nothing to relate to.

A minimum of 30 to 40 hours I should think. Hemp cones seem to require more use before they start to loosen up -- usually a 50-hour minimum.

Found a Weber 6-inch Signature alnico, in my stash. I bought it from a guy who was going to install it into a RI Champion 600, but decided to go to a ceramic Weber.

I'll try to place it into my 1947 Champion 600 and tell you how it fits and sounds.

Irrelevant for a single speaker amp.
