Hello, years ago I bought this amp that needed re-coning. The original speaker is an Oxford 6". I could not find anyone to re-cone it, and I still can't. No one can do anything less than an 8" vintage speaker for some reason. What should I do, replace the speaker (I'll store the original, of course)? If so, what is the best speaker? I cannot tell from the wiring diagram what impedance should I get (I'm not good at reading electrical diagrams). Thank you.

The single-ended Fender amps were typically designed to drive a 3.2 ohm voice coil. Thus, any 6" speaker (assuming you can find one) of 4Ω impedance should be fine.

I put one of these into my 1947 Champion 600. Sounds remarkably good.

Good find there Beemer, the OP should be clicking the "Order" button now, especially at that price :!: :!:

Thanks guys. I will go with your suggestion Beemer once I confirm it will fit in the cabinet. According to the website, it "Will NOT fit in early tweed Champ (w/6" speaker)."
I'll check and let you know!

Yeah, the ceramic version has the same caveat.

WTF did they even make the sonofabitch for if not for a tweed Champ?

The ceramic Weber 6-inch works fine in my 1947 Champion 600. I've put several of the alnico 6-inch Webers into ppl's RI Champion 600's. No problem. I may have a spare one lying around. I'll try it in my '47.

The only tweed Champ I have is a 5F1. Which has an 8-inch Weber.

Hey BMW, re: the Weber in your Champ, did you have to do anything to avoid contact between the back of the magnet and the tubes? Can't tell from the pic. Also, what year is it? BTW, I've had email exchange with Weber and I may send them my speaker to see if it is re-conable. They cannot tell if it's re-conable until they've seen it. I've also asked for a recommendation for a replacement speaker. Hope to hear soon..

Looks tight TBM, but if Steve say's it'll fit then you should be home free. Those Ferromax Weber's are a great upgrade for any Champ -- whether tweed, blackface, or silverface.

Hey BMW, did you replace it because it isn't as good as the Weber, or did you need to replace it because it was ripped or something? Reason I'm asking is because I may have options; 1) they re-cone it or 2) buy a replacement.

My thoughts now are sending them the original to see if they can re-cone. If not, get the replacement you linked. Or do you think re-coning is a waste of time/$$? Thanks.

You may want to re-cone it. I replaced it because the original is a Cleveland 6-inch speaker. It's in good shape for 60 years old. So I stored it away. I play the amp about once or twice a month. It's has a great OD tone.

Thanks, BMW. From researching this, I'm going to send it in for a re-cone after I try mending of the cone from some youtube videos I found. If that doesn't work, I'll send to Weber. One thing I learned from emails back and forth, plus checking out their website, is that those guys know speakers. Anyway, the reason their Sig series doesn't fit old tweed Champs is their 6" speakers are slightly smaller in diameter than those used by Fender back then. So the bolt holes don't line up. He said you can take out the original screw mounts and still put theirs in with wood screws. He also said they won't know about re-coning mine until they see if the voice coil will fit. I guess they can't use the original. Thanks for the help.

That requires drilling additional holes in the baffle board -- not something I would do with an otherwise all-original tweed Fender.

The ideal solution is to have the OEM Oxford re-coned if possible.

+1K...Keeping it as original as possible is the way to go. Reconing would get my first vote, then if not go, with the Weber. If you go with the Weber, keeping the original tucked away for down the road will bring more $$ if and when resale comes
