I have an old valve amp, I think it may be circa 70's.

When I turn the Master Volume on 2 and the Normal volume on 2 it is loud. When I turn the Master Volume to 10 and the Normal volume to 2 it is very very loud.

How can I get a nice clean big sound but at lower volumes? If I try to put the Master Volume on 1 and the Normal Volume on 1 it seems like 100% quieter than Master 2 Norm 2.

The reason I ask is because I never understood the volume settings. For instance when I put the Master on 10 then when I use the normal volume control anything over 3 is just the same absolute loudness.

Yup. That's how master volume amps work.

The master volume controls the overall level of the signal going to the power tubes. The preamp volume, or "gain", controls the signal level of the preamp stage.

Turning the master volume down and the gain up will give you preamp overdrive. Turning the master volume up and the gain down will usually give you a loud, cleaner signal. Turning both controls up will give you a very loud and overdriven tone. To get a clean, quiet volume you need to turn both controls down. Depending on the taper of each control and the overall gain structure of the amp, it may still be fairly loud.

What amp is it?

Thank you for verifying that what I am experiencing is normal. So in other words my options in terms of volume control are: loud, very loud and I am now clinically deaf.

The beast I have is 100W Twin Reverb black face. I tried to identify exact model many times but nothing matches 100%.

So is it normal for me to only be able to raise the pre amp to 3 if master is on 10 before reaching full volume?)? Master 10 and pre amp 10 sound the exact same as Master 10 and Pre Amp 3 except it distorts and deafens everyone.

I tried using the Line Out but apparently no volume plays through it unless the volumes are all set as you would normally play. Plus if I unplug the speakers I was told it will cook the valves and amp as valves expect a load. Then there is the problem that the actual output from the line out plug at the back doesn't sound anything like the amp.

The line-out jack provides a pre-amp signal only, to be used as an input for a recording device, PA system, or stand-alone power amp.

From the pictures it looks like the 65 Twin Reverb Re-issue. But I know the amp is older than 1992 which is the start date given for the re-issue. I have always suspected that the amp was modded because the valves are weird and there is no real serial number or anything like that inside.

If you post a pic of your amp and the serial number, perhaps we can actually help you.

Master volume would be a silverface, 70s-80s era, but definitely not a '65 reissue.
