In 1970 I purchased a Brownface Deluxe that had a trashed speaker. In the ignorance of my youth, I chopped the cabinet to turn it into a head instead of buying a replacement speaker.

I now wish to build a cabinet to restore it to it's original form but am having trouble finding dimensions. I have searched this forum and the internet in general but have had no luck. My guess is that many of the pictures I see of these amps with cabinets that are in very good shape have had new cabinets made and so are not reliable as source of dimensions. I have not been able to reliably determine if the cabinet is rectangular, when viewed from the side or trapezoidal.

If any of you have access to a Brownface Deluxe with an original cabinet and could be of assistance with supplying some of the dimension, your efforts would be appreciated.

Contact Rockometer Amplifiers. He does solid wood cabinets built to vintage specs.

Thank you for your suggestion. As I would like to build the cabinet myself, I wouldn't feel right about asking someone that builds these cabinets for a living for the information so I am still hoping for someone to reply that has access to an original Deluxe Brownface.

Sorry - just thought if you didn't want to build the cabinet but start from the box and finish it off yourself - this might be a source.

Good luck.

I would definitely stick with pine-plank construction for the case due to its superior resonant properties and lighter weight. Plywood should be reserved for the baffle board and rear panels (½" and ¼", respectively).

Arjay, thank you for confirming the thickness of the baffle board. My plan was to go with pine with fingerjoints for the box and plywood for the baffle and rear pieces.

Another question I have is how the cleats are fastened to the main box. In some pictures on the web, it appears as though they are fastened with a nail gun and possibly glued.

Typically, the interior cleats are affixed with glue only but I routinely use both adhesive and screws to securely fasten them to the planks as with this reproduction cabinet......

The added screws at the rear will be concealed with Tolex (or in this case, brown Nubtex) and the front ones will be relatively unobtrusive once the speaker is installed and the back panels are attached.

Arjay the cabinet you made turned out very well indeed. I am hopeful mine will be as good.

Here's the complete amp......

This is not a real brownface Pro Amp but a pseudo-clone configured for a pair of ten's. The chassis is in fact a '68 Bandmaster and the speakers are re-coned CTS alnico's from a '71 Super Reverb.

I pre-aged the interior of the cabinet using Minwax Colonial Maple stain then printed up a reproduction tube chart and pasted it inside. Vintage 14-inch "PATENT PENDING" tilt-back legs complete the illusion.
