I recently got the chance to compare a Silverface Twin Reverb side-by-side to a Silverface Super Reverb, both with Master Volume. Both amps share exactly the same preamp circuit. I turned the Masters down to 3 to listen to the sounds of the preamps of the Vibrato channels. Worlds apart! The SR sounded fat, with superb breakup almost like a Boogie MK I, while the Twin sounded clean and sterile. What should I look into to get the Twin to sound like the Super?

I'd dial Master to 10 and then test both :D

Get a Super Reverb! I just don't think your going to get a Supers Fatness from a Twin...at least not at a volume your ears can stand.

T2

Any analysis of the comparison is meaningless without further information about both amps. Was one (or both of them) an ultra-linear model? If so, which one? What speakers were installed? What tubes? What idle-bias setting? There are too many unknown variables which render any judgment to be total conjecture.

If said Super Reverb were a 70-watt, solid-state rectified, ultra-linear version it would sound NOTHING like an AB763 amp.

Good french .

Trop puissant le Twin reverb , Twin Reverb too much powerfull and too heavy , more than the SR .But it is a matter a taste too .

If I had both side by side and could test them I'll buy the one with better tone .

frodobaggins write TR sound is clean and sterile , maybe just a good tune up lile warmer bias ?

I realize that there may be differences in the driver and output stages. But as I had turned the Master way down on both amps, the driver and power sections are pretty much out of the equation. Still, the preamp section of the Super Reverb sounds WAY more fat and alive, although both preamps look the same on paper and have the same JJ preamp tubes. Could the differences in the A, B, C and D supply voltages be responsible for that? The Super has a 5U4 rectifier tube while the Twin has a SS rectifier.

Then the Super Reverb is a "real" Super Reverb (closely akin to Leo's original design).

This may be the primary reason why it sounds more harmonically-rich and organic than the Twin Reverb you compared it against. Sonically, the Twin Reverb was designed to remain clean regardless of how hard it's pushed, much like the Showman from whence the TR's architecture originated. The solid-state diode stack rectifier plays a large role in that. OTOH a tube rectifier (whether a 5U4GB or a GZ34) provides "sag" under high-load demands which yields the compression and warmth that most SR fans prefer.

To properly compare it must be assumed that these two amplifiers is in good condition.

Which are far from certain. My preference is still for the Super Reverb as I l have already mentioned
