The AB568 Bandmaster Reverb was based on the AA768 Super Reverb, mating most of the SR's circuitry with the output tranny from a Pro Reverb. Thus, it will not sound quite the same as an AB763 Bandmaster but nor a Super Reverb either. The tone always struck me as being akin to a Pro Reverb, with the vibrato channel being a bit fatter due to the BMR's added middle tone control. Used with the companion 2 x 12 enclosure, the BMR offered a skosh better bass response than an open-back combo cab.

Maybe. But a 6V6 does not have the bass response that a 6L6GC does.

This is true. But the amp can be "tricked" into thinking it has more by using a carefully selected speaker. It's why my Spankmaster Reverb's with their 15-inch JBL speakers sound as throaty as they do.

Which is why I qualified my response with a positive "maybe".

A perfectly legitimate method of equivocation.

Politicians do it all the time.

Nedorama,
I have one of each, a '67 Bandmaster and a '74 Bandmaster reverb. But yeah, they both have their own unique sound. The BM has a tighter bass response with a brighter sound while the BMR has a warmer creamier sound. Fwiw, I converted the BMR to blackface specs as suggested in one of my older guitar player magazine articles written by Gerald Webber.

Been watching this thread. I tried some NOS Phillips JAN 6V6GT's in my '67 Band Master(2X12 open-back cab), this evening. Biased them to 10 watts per tube. They were pretty neat up to 6. After that they fizzed the speakers, when pushed. Don't have a clue to that behavior! Popped the RCA BP 6L6GC's back in, at about 20watts per tube. No fizz up to 8(that's all I could take). Cool experiment !!! Art

You might repeat the 6V6GT test using an 8-ohm speaker load and see if the results improve.

I'm with you, Arjay, on the 6V6's impedance mis-match to the OT. Just thought I'd try it, for the thread's sake. There's no way I'd mess with the line-up in my old guy!!! We're a couple of geezers that get along quite well !!!! Art

You guys are something else, lol.

Art,
Thanks for trying out those 6v6's in you BM. I really appreciate you taking the time to try it out. I might have to give it a go with an 8 ohm load as Arjay suggested just to see, i mean hear the differences.

Arjay and Bill,

You guys remind me of Lucy and Ricky sometimes, as for who is who....I think I'll let you two decide :D .
I love seeing your differing points of view in these threads from time to time:lol:  I think you two compliment each other very well, but I also want to thank you guys for taking the time to share your expertise and knowledge with all us folks. Same goes for all the members of this forum who have time and time again contributed much needed information to any all who have requested it. My gratitude goes out to all of you.....

Peace....

No problem, Socal. We're all here to share and learn.

Rawk on!

It's my pleasure, Socal !!! And I'm cool with the Fred Mirts(sp?) slot. Seriously, I'm no stranger with messin' around with these venerable amps. Actually, my B-Master has a tube rectifier(GZ34) and '59 Bassman trannies. Being a player and not a collector, with enough know-how to see which end of the blow-torch to use, allows a lot of freedom!!! Have fun with the amp and the music!!! Art

I was thinking more along the lines of Mutt and Jeff.
