When I got my '73 Princeton Reverb a month ago, it came w/ the original Oxford 10J4 speaker.

Even though I upgraded the Oxford in my '67 Deluxe to a Jensen C12N (great swap by the way), the Oxford speaker sounded so good in the PR that I decided to not look for a Jensen replacement... at least for now.

Anyway, today I made a run to the grocery store, going past a very creatively decorated, newly opened, Jun'q Store which caught my eye, cute I thought.

Got my groceries, and on my return home, as I passed the shop, I thought about the Dining Rm. chairs Mrs. LMN and I were thinking of replacing. Several years ago, she got a 150 y.o. solid Mahogany Dining Table from her Grandmother, a truly magnificent hand-hewn 10 place (w/ leaf) table. Unfortunately, it came w/ 6 horrible 1930s chairs. We always spoke about keeping an eye out for better, nicer, vintage ones.

Nothing going the rest of the day, I thought I should check out this new store to see if they had any nice chairs. Swung a U'wy, pulled up outside and went in. They had several sets of chairs, but none that would meet our criteria.

As I went to leave, I spotted a lone speaker laying cone-down on a shelf, looked to be a Jensen. Sure enough, it was a Jensen C10Q. The tag on it said $30.00.

I picked it up, and saw that it was date-coded 24th Week of 1967. Turned it over and the cone was in excellent shape, though not a seamed cone as I expected. Written on it in Wht. Marker was: Reconed 8/'89. The basket was in nice shape - clean, no rust. The Gold/Brown generic Jensen label was not perfect, but intact.

I brought it to the owner and asked if she'd take $20 for it? She replied that during the Grand Opening, everything was 50% off the ticket price so... $15

I asked what the return policy was and she said if it didn't work to bring it back for a full refund... BINGO !!!

Brought it home, checked impedence - 7.23Ω, installed it in the PR... Works great ! :D

But here's the thing... when removing the Oxford, it's apparent that it too has been rebuilt/reconed w/ a 'proper' seamed cone.

The Jensen sounds very different, though I'm not sure in a good way. Breaks up much sooner. Also seems to be too Bass-Heavy.

I may actually prefer the sound of the Oxford in this amp.

No matter... for now I'll keep them both and decide later which one will permanently reside in the PR.

For $15, it really doesn't matter. 8)

cheers!

In rotorwing parlance, we call that a "pedal turn".

Nice score, Jim!

LM...Congrats! Can't beat that price on a Jensen, even if you had to recone it! Also congrats, sounds like you found the one great Oxford speaker!
