Thanks, Jerry. I checked the faceplate's vendor to see if he had a Dual Showman Reverb plate to spiff yours up but he only had the non-verb Showman type.

Those silverface control plates were originally stocked by a company in The Netherlands called "Verduin Amplification" but they went titzup about a year ago and sold their inventory to TAD in Germany. TAD had them priced at around ninety bucks plus they wanted $28 to ship it across the puddle. Too rich for Mr. Frugal me! But when some showed up here on Ebay for $75 plus $12 S&H I figured that was as good as it was ever gonna get.

Arjay,

Thanks for thinking of me for spiffing up my Showman. It is a bit banged up, however, it is not a Dual Showman:

I have never even seen another Showman Amp like mine, much less a new faceplate for one.

I know what you mean about the cost of a faceplate from TAD. The new one for my SFSR cost me $124.00 and over $50 of it was for shipping. But, I knew that it would be near impossible to find one anywhere else.

I'm glad you were able to find a new faceplate for your amp for a high but acceptable price.

Jerry

Faceplate make a world of difference in these silverface amps. How's the Showman's socket doing? I got a bunch of mil spec sockets, so if necessary we can go that route.

Just used it for 1.5 hours yesterday. Quiet as a mouse. No pops, static or anything. I'll keep checking and let you know.

Thanks for checking on it.

You can always count on "Doctor Steve" to provide follow-up care for all of his patients.

Glad it's idling quiet. "Quiet as a mouse" isn't exactly how I'd describe this amp. As my neighbors can attest to, after that 2am test drive.

No sweat, Jerry......anytime.

At the moment I'm helping Steve get the necessary hardware together for his upcoming Bassman cab build. Should be a winner when plugged into his newly refurbished Bassman head. And I'm scrounging up some goodies for T2Stratman.

We gotta keep these old amps happy.

And keeping them happy sure is appreciated by this guy!

Speaking of sourcing parts, has anybody found a source yet for the corner pieces for drip edge? Since Fender is making the drip edge reissues I was thinking somebody might have ferreted out a source.

You guys have certainly kept my amps happy and I really really appreciate it !!

With your combined knowledge, I'm sure that Steve's Bassman cab build will be showroom quality.

Your consult on bringing my SFSR to vibrant life was invaluable as well as Steve's magic soldering gun and expertise. My Showman too!!

Isn't the milled size of the lumber used in '68 and 2014 different? I suspect Fender is using "modern" lumber for the 68 Custom series. This would affect the dimensions of the corner protectors. I know my '69 used an odd ball size (vintage.) I guess Arjay might have some input on this...

I can't speak to furniture grade material, but otherwise the dimensions for lumber have not changed from 1968 to now. Standardization of sizes began around 1924. Most lumber sizes as we know them today were set by the end of WW II. You might find the odd-sized 2x in your 1950's house, but that would be related to the local lumber yard not using the standards sets by the rest of the forest industry.

The issue related the amps would be the amount of planing that Fender (or whoever they had mill the material) did to the material prior to assembling the cabinets (if they are obtaining a precut board and the quality of the material). Or whether their source provides 1/2" thick material or 9/16" (as an example) if its some sort of engineered product (particle or plywood).

Contemporary pine planks as used by FMIC do seem to be thinner than the lumber of the blackface era. I've measured a true 3/4" thickness on the older amp cabinets but the newer material is closer to 11/16". Thus the fit of steel corner protectors is less precise than with vintage equipment. Some compensation for this discrepancy is the fact that new Tolex uses a slightly thicker backing substrate than the thinner original covering. So it does equalize out to some degree. This is likely the reason that Fender abandoned the superior lipped corner protectors with countersunk mounting screws in favor of the no-lip design that attaches via standard round-head screws. Only the re-issue models use Leo's original types to preserve their historical accuracy.
