cedarblues, the c & c/s are on my watching list too.

I would like to hear your feedback on the c after you give him a good crank

ps. no problems with mounting the D, the mounting screws were long enough.

It's 1.00am here .. a bit late to test the speaker.... ...

... but tomorrow ...

I'm loving the cleans with a Strat! It brightened up the amp, which was the goal... nicer tight bass, but the highs are not as sweet as the Jensen C12N, which is still my favorite speaker in a DR. My 345 with humbuckers was surprisingly too bright with this speaker, and didn't really like it cranked. It still needs time to loosen up the cone some...

Glad you didn't run into any issues mounting the JBL. So how does it sound?

The JBL sounds very good, especially for cleans. This is an outstanding speaker even though its pretty old.

Great bottom and all the Fender sparkle & bells at the top. :D :D

I think I need more testing with this bad guys in the distortion department ...

Nikola, how's the tone of that GWS versus a Celestion Vintage 30?

Thanks!

Its a top screamer, especially when the volume pot pass 7. 8)

I must admit this speakers sounds better than JBL D120F when cranked .. with cleans - it shines too. Good bottom as well.

The good thing is its close to 100dB, so it makes the little amp sound a bit louder.

I don't have any Celestion at hand to test

Hi all,
bringing this old tread back to life, after nearly 18 months of playing this lovely amp regularly.
Opinions required about the break up volume.
I do use JJ 6V6s' tubes.
The amps stays clean up to, say, Vol 3.5, but at Vol 4 the amp starts to get that famous BF kind of distortion.
How's yours DeLuxe's in this regard?
Do they all start to break up at 3.5ish Vol?
Any way this can be changed, and the amp stays clean at a bit higher Vol?

Opinions welcome!

My SFDR breaks up at 4.5 as well, when I use my PRS SE. In full disclosure the stock humbuckers in it are really hot. It will start to break up with my TX special equipped strat around 5.5 or 6.

I have a Jensen C12K in mine with EHX power tubes.

I can't get mine to break up anywhere before 5 with a strat. I'm running it with a 5u4gb, GE 6v6Gt's, I've pulled v1, and a tung sol reissue in v2. I'm even running the bias on the warm side. Speaker is a cannabis rex. Could be that your amp is biased really hot.

Abe,

Try a speaker with lower wattage rating. Somewhere in the neighborhood of an original Jensen P12R. Maybe, a modern day Weber 12A100T.

Wow, the 12A100T is only rated at 15Watts.
Not suitable for a 22W amp

Nikola, that is the idea. Overdrive the speaker. You maybe buying new speakers, a lot. But, you will definitely hear OD, long before you are putting 22 watts into the speaker.

It's an old trick used by plenty of artists, before fancy pedals. I think Buddy Guy used old car speakers or punctured cones to get early fuzzy OD tones.

Anyhow, just another option.
